What would you imagine the perf impacts are of adding 1,000 additional constants (MY_CONST=...) to the top level (root) Ruby namespace? How would you measure them?

@adamlogic I’m curious your take: I put jobs that work with external APIs on dedicated queues, preventing API degradation from having an outsized bottlenecking effect on other jobs. Eventually at a certain size I handle this with dedicated “circuit breakers,” this seems to work to start

A couple weeks ago I wrote a scaling guide for the Sidekiq wiki. The issue I see most people run into is simply cranking their concurrency up too high, especially on Heroku dynos. You probably don't want more than five threads.

This might be heresy but: 1. Code reviews are a massive productivity tax with tiny quality benefits 2. They should not be mandated 3. The author should feel free to request a review if they want it 4. If you don't trust your engineers, invest more in CI, or hire better ones

A poet who doesn’t have great strategic sense is likely a loner or a populist, poetry alone isn’t sufficient, but strategy alone will run you straight into Chesterton’s curious case of the mad hatter—mad because he measures people’s heads

Some time back I deliberately pivoted from optimizing for abstractions and strategy to optimizing for poetry, and I think those two terms are a helpful distinction and comparison between engineering and leadership

So many engineers I work with invest so much effort into marketing a future where we have more options. I can already spell any future I want into a computer. I already have infinite options. I am already a wizard. Commit to one option that improves our future position

Every company needs 2-3 senior+ engineers who have fuck you money or just have 0 fear of getting fired. Then when the architect or tech fellow or whoever unveil their new plan, those engineers unmute to say wtf is this, we're not moving everything into Lambda, are you high???
