obviously there's no point in engaging with this as if it's in good faith, but where does the idea come from that shapiro was so obviously the presumptive winner that selecting anyone else can only be explained by bigotry

With the benefit of hindsight: Ween was the best band of the 1990s, but the best album was Faith No More's "Angel Dust" and the best song was Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother." I know these aren't the results anyone was hoping for, but sunlight is the best disinfectant.
