I know exactly when it started.
Tuesday. 11pm.
I dreamt I woke up.
Not symbolic. Not abstract.
I dreamt the specific act of waking up in my bed. In my room. In my flat in Gbagada.
I sat up. Checked my phone. 6:14am. Went to the bathroom. Brushed my teeth. Made tea. Sat by the window.
Normal morning. Nothing strange.
Then I actually woke up.
6:14am.
I went to the bathroom.
I went to make tea.
I sat by the window.
And the feeling hit me so hard I had to put the cup down.
I had already done this.
Not déjà vu.
Not the vague uncomfortable echo of something familiar.
I had already done this.
Exactly this.
In my sleep.

I moved to this street 1 month ago.
The school was the first thing I noticed.
Big compound. Old building. Iron bell on a post in the middle of the yard.
Gate always open.
I assumed it was still operating.
Asked my landlord about it on the day I moved in.
He looked at where I was pointing.
Frowned slightly.
“That school has been closed for twenty years,” he said.
I looked at the compound.
Empty. Gate open. Building weathered but standing.
“Who cuts the grass?” I said.
He looked at me for a moment.
“What grass,” he said.
I pointed at the compound.
Neat. Low. Clearly maintained.
He looked.
“Overgrown,” he said.
“Hasn’t been touched in years.”
We were looking at the same compound.
I let it go.

First lecture of the semester.
Dr. Fashola is taking attendance.
He gets to a name “Tunde Aborisade” and calls it twice.
Nobody answers.
He marks it present both times.
Then he looks up at the class and says, very quietly:
"Row G. Back left corner. Don't sit there tomorrow."
Then he moves straight on.
No explanation.
Just continues down the register like he said nothing unusual at all.
We looked at each other.
Nobody spoke.
The seat in row G, back left corner, was already empty.
