I'm maybe the only Catholic on Twitter to believe that every Pope in my lifetime has been an extraordinary blessing to the Church. JP2, Benedict, Francis, Leo, all remarkable people and gifts to the Faith.

For the first time since 1994, the Pope is personally carrying the Cross for all 14 Stations of the Cross, as Pope Leo XIV leads the Via Crucis at Rome’s Colosseum in the first Good Friday of his Pontificate.

@thepopecast Yeah I’ve seen very good examples. Sadly not here in Scotland where we have 1 OSB where he could’ve made a bigger impact. He’s not got much competition.

It's always been a bit baffling to me how notorious historical figures from religious orders – especially Franciscans – could act so terribly given their ascetic rule of life.
But after observing Bishop Martin over these past sad months, I think I understand it better.

Who said anything about rejecting diocesan life? On the discernment front surely it's a calling "to" and not a calling "away from".
At any rate, when the nuncio calls it's absolutely an invitation into trial. For the good ones, at least. The ones who hope or plan for that call, though, are guys who bear fruit like +Martin.

@thepopecast I get that. But what about their rejection of living the diocesan life until they become ‘our boss’ and surely it goes against their choice of a particular way of life etc?

@SPMS1798 There's good cases to be made (see: Pope Leo) that religious priests govern better over certain situations because of their vow to uphold the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience in a way distinct from that of diocesan priests.

They talk about Catholics being spiritually Irish or spiritually Italian but the third one is being spiritually Spanish, where you have lax behavior generally like Italian but when you go to church the weight of your guilt crushes you like the Irish.

1a. Dominicans
1b. Augustinians
2a. Benedictines of all stripes
2b. Franciscans of all stripes
2c. The silent/contemplative/cloistered orders (Carthusians, Trappists, Cistercians)
Last: Jesuits (undeniable past contributions but they're just horrendous as an order now)

Right now given all of each orders' history? Each order according to its high point? Just medieval era, just Renaissance era?

What he presumably thinks is a humble gesture – delegating the washing of the feet to lay people – is in fact arrogance and misses Jesus' entire point: that the "Son of Man does not come to be served but to serve"
