Why I’m building Chalant. Or, How Taylor Swift Convinced Me to Start a Tech Company. ✨ In 2016, I started @holyswiftpod with a couple of friends. At the time, I was a lukewarm @taylorswift13 fan who was new to Austin and looking for a fun hobby outside of my marketing day job. But after a 7-year run and 170+ episodes dissecting every lyric, interviewing music journalists about her the magic of her songwriting and business acumen, and diving deep into the fandom she’s fostered, I found myself a full-blown Swiftie™️. (🫶🫶🫶) Cut to the absolute cultural juggernaut that was the Eras Tour and the Swiftie fandom had somehow reached newer, bigger, more chaotic heights. Done with the podcast, I had serious FOMO. I needed a new fandom outlet. Enter @taypedia. I launched Taypedia, the first online magazine and beehiiv newsletter for Swifties, last July as a way for fans to not only keep up with the constant feed of Taylor-related news, but to also *celebrate* these fans by publishing their Taylor-related personal essays, cultural analyses, merch roundups, and more. (Btw, you should go read some of them. This fandom is TALENTED.) The site quickly grew to 100k users / 5k newsletter subscribers, and I was fully immersed back into Swiftieland. But the deeper I got into building Taypedia, the more I realized it wasn’t just Taylor’s music or the buzzy tour that pulled people in, it was the *community* of it all. The way fans connect over lyrics, form inside jokes, create fan art, coordinate outfits, and turn online connections into real life friendships — it really is something wild to watch. Something powerful. But also something...scattered. I started noticing how fragmented the fan experience was. News lived on Twitter. The best essays were hidden on Tumblr. Live streams happened on TikTok. Merch drops were on Etsy. Tour meetups happened in rogue group chats. For years, Swifties (and fans of *every* artist) have been doing the MOST to find each other, share things, and build their own little fandom corners of the internet. I realized that there was a bigger opportunity here. I found myself asking: what if there was a better space built just for music fans? A place where fandom wasn’t an afterthought, but the *whole point*? Thanks to the LinkedIn Connection Gods, I met my co-founder Bekah last fall to talk about Taypedia and it turned out she’d been asking herself the same question. That question became Chalant. 💖 We’re building @chalant_media because fans deserve their own space, one that actually understands what it means to love an artist, go deep into lyrics, scream in all caps about vault tracks, Juno positions, Coachella set easter eggs (or whatever makes your fandom tic) AND find your people along the way. This space — made by fans, for fans — is launching soon at chalant.net 🫶 Sign up for the waitlist to be the first to know which fandoms we’re launching first (👀) and how to get early access. ✨

Writers submit their pitches to the Placed Database and editors can search for keywords or browse by category to find pitches that fit with their publication. When you find a pitch you love, you can reach out to the writer directly via their contact info and work out the details.

@thepracticalpen Like who does she call to actually get them to change it? I just assume she calls Tree Paine and says “figure it out” lol

If I ever meet Taylor Swift, my first question is going to be -who do you call when you want to change the capital letters in "thanK you aIMee" to "thank You aimEe". It drives me nuts.

@zanmerusteff Good luck! I definitely go in spurts, too. Sometimes, I'm sending 10 a day and then I'll go 10 days (or more) without sending anything at all!

I've felt a little burned out on pitching editors I haven't worked with before so I've taken a break for a few months, but I'm ready to get back into it! Wish me luck 😂

@nuclearunicorns I have to go back and edit them out of my writing! Does an article need an em dash in every paragraph? Maybe it does.

I got a reply from an editor at a magazine I've always wanted to write for within one day of pitching! No official assignment yet, but I'm still recording that as a win ✨

No one told me that in 2023 you have to buy movie tickets and reserve your seats ahead of time. In the olden days, we just showed up and waited in line, and I did not get the memo that had changed. So we're going to a movie today instead of yesterday.
