Fuck @stripe why don’t u give any warning that the 1st payment would be held for 7-14 day? As an early stage startup we received my first revenue that to be used in operational expenses but cannot even use our own money. If I knew it, I would have rather user paypal or venmo tf

There’s always an energetic exchange. If you force what resists you, you may gain it, but you’ll give up something else in return. Nothing comes without trade.

A living piece of history is swimming beneath the Arctic ice. This Greenland shark has been alive since 1627. It was born before Isaac Newton🦈

@marcrandolph This resonates a lot. Most advice is directionally useful, not universally correct. Context, timing, and the founder matter more than any framework. The best we can do is share what worked somewhere and let others adapt.

One of the truths about entrepreneurship is that nothing is one size fits all. There is very very little advice that is universally applicable. When I share something that has a positive effect, I certainly dont mean to imply that it will always have the same effect for everyone, or have the same strength effect, or even have any effect at all. While most of the advice I share on this platform will not work for everyone - and may not even work for most - I try very hard to share things that my experience has show will work for some. And that's the best that I - or anyone - can do.

The more you can prove before you raise money, the easier it will be to raise - and the higher the quality person you can attract.

@marcrandolph Vision looks like exaggeration to outsiders and feels like responsibility to the person holding it.

Early on at Netflix I was hiring someone and told them that I thought the stock had the potential to be X (a big number). Later, someone who had overheard, took me aside and said "don't you feel guilty bullshitting someone like that?" And it took me aback - because it wasn't bullshit. I genuinely believed it. Conviction is an incredibly powerful force.

Exceptional people put a premium on working with other exceptional people. This requires that you not only hire well, but cut smartly. It means taking the “no jerks” policy seriously, even for high-performing jerks.

@marcrandolph Confidence is believing you can navigate uncertainty. Hubris is believing uncertainty won’t show up.

Stories like this make me think it requires being old enough to have seen what happens when the wind shifts or the tide goes out. It’s one thing to be confident. It’s another to think you can predict the future.

@marcrandolph An average idea executed relentlessly beats a brilliant idea abandoned early.

A great idea might be a multiplier, but i would argue it’s a very weak multiplier. 99% of what kind of success someone sees comes from the quality of their execution. Maybe 1% comes from starting with a "better" idea than someone else.

It’s not that difficult to tell when someone is not delivering. In my experience the hard thing isn't knowing ... it's having the courage to do something about it. But by not doing something about it, you are either going to look weak or stupid. Stupid, because you can't see what's happening. Or weak, because you do see it, but are too fearful to do anything about it. Not the choice you want to have to make.

@marcrandolph Hedging keeps you alive. Focus makes you dangerous. The trick is knowing when to switch.

Most founders who bet everything never get a second dart. If you've hedged and things go sideways, you're still in the game. That's the win. You've bought yourself another shot—and with it, more 'luck surface area' to find you.
