I get why Broncos fans are upset. Free agency is more fun when your team is making big moves. But I'm not sure what Broncos fans expected. The NFL is a salary cap league. Denver gave out big extensions to keep their stars. Yes, you can restructure contracts and push your cap debts to the future (like the Broncos just did with Meinerz) but eventually the bill comes due. Denver dodged the impact of the Russ deal by pushing cap hits to the future. The Broncos are bottom five in cap space in 2027 and 2028, as of right now. They've used up most of their flexibility. If Denver wants to free up cap space to spend this year, they could find a way. But there would be no way to avoid a cap crunch next offseason that would force them to cut good players to save money. It's bad business. By my count, Denver has about $10-$15m left to play with this offseason. Hopefully by tomorrow we'll get a more trustworthy number. I'm sure the Broncos will spend every penny of it. They decided getting into bidding wars in the first couple of days isn't the right move. I don't think they're wrong. Anybody mad about the Adam Trautman deal is free to their own opinion. It's more money than I expected. But now he's slotted in between Chiefs TE Noah Gray and 49ers TE Luke Farrell. Sounds about right to me. That's market value. My plan for the offseason was to run it back with Strnad and Singleton at LB and cut Greenlaw. Obviously, I think they made the right decision, but I get why others may have opted for another plan. Devin Lloyd would have been fun. Awesome athlete. He got my All-Pac-12 vote back in the day. But for double Singleton's price tag, I didn't think the Broncos would get enough of an upgrade. Again, to each their own. There are about a dozen running backs I would rather have than either Kenneth Walker or Travis Etienne. Free agency means paying premium prices for that tier of player, though. I would've been tempted to pull the trigger. I don't dislike the gamble on J.K. instead, though. I didn't think he would cost $8 million, but I like him at that number a hell of a lot better than Allgeier or Dowdle at $7 million. It's been a C+ offseason so far. They've got the ammo to make a big move of some kind, and I'm surprised they haven't made that move yet. They, obviously, won't roll into the season without using it, though. Luckily there are no bonus points for getting deals done quickly.

Every year my draft evals get clowned & every year I'm the only one who's right. 2023: Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, & Anthony Richardson all stink. I'd rather have Levis in the 2nd. 2024: Drake Maye is the best QB prospect I've ever graded. Daniels will have a nice rookie year in Kingsbury's system, then fall apart. 2025: Tyler Shough is a star. He should go 1st overall. Ward will change nothing for TEN since Levis wasn't the problem. Shedeur shouldn't be drafted top 100. I got clowned for each take. Maye is the AFC MVP, starting the Super Bowl next week. Shough is rookie of the year. Stroud & Young are holding on to jobs for dear life. Ward is standing on the edge, too. I don't miss.
