TW: Murder My parents left South Africa (one of the most beautiful nations in the world) in 1997 and came to the US with nothing because they believed the country was too dangerous to live in. When I was young, my aunt still living in South Africa was robbed tied and drowned at home in her bathtub in broad daylight. My family remaining in South Africa has been stuck because the USD:RAND conversion is 1:18.41 (imagine your bank divided by 19 just to leave). My parents have used so much money even when they’ve had little to help family get out. South Africa was once a rich prosperous nation. The government of South Africa has failed its people. Corruption absolutely rampant. Politicians swindling money and international aid for themselves. Crime rates are unimaginable and on average 67 people are murdered daily with only a 15% conviction rate. It’s not uncommon to have concrete compounds with razor wire and guard dogs. Infrastructure is absolutely crumbling. There are rolling blackouts and people go without power. It hurts to see this headline today. I hope there’s still time to brighten the future of South Africa, a nation where neighboring Africans can flee danger and corruption and find work.
