It’s impossible to encapsulate my entire year of 2024 in one minute. There were challenges and doubts, but most importantly, there were invaluable experiences. 2024 has been a year of growth, both in the realm of international affairs and in my journey as a reporter. As I look ahead, the path will undoubtedly bring more challenges, but the opportunity to continue covering global affairs remains as exciting and crucial as ever. Happy New Year, you all!

Seeing news clips with Chinese subtitles circulating on Chinese social media—mostly from American journalists, likely White House correspondents traveling with President Trump in Beijing—is actually a positive sign of people-to-people exchange. They’re trying local food, ordering coffee from robots, walking through the streets… exploring the city firsthand. At its core, this is exactly what people-to-people exchange looks like. Isn’t that a good thing?

Xi to Trump: peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait a core commitment between China and the US. President Xi stressed that the Taiwan issue remains the most important factor in China-US relations - “Handled properly, the overall relationship between our two countries can remain stable,Handled poorly, it could lead to clashes or even conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a highly dangerous situation.”

🇨🇳 🇺🇸 Along the airport expressway in Beijing, Chinese and US flags have been raised to mark Donald Trump’s arrival this evening—the first US state visit to China since 2017.

A historic moment may be unfolding in Beijing. 🇨🇳 Reports suggest President Trump could visit the Temple of Heaven during his state visit this Wednesday — which would make him only the second US president to walk these sacred grounds, 50 years after Gerald Ford in 1975. Built in 1420, this UNESCO masterpiece was where Chinese emperors stood beneath the open sky, praying for harmony between Heaven and Earth. If confirmed, the choice of venue would send a powerful message: that even between rivals, some doors remain open.

It's always interesting to see how I’m portrayed in Chinese state media—we seem to have a very on-off relationship. Usually I take being quoted as cause for concern. But in this case I think it’s notable the CCP was willing to look past all the accusatory language in my essay (I called China’s approach to AI governance hollow and performative!)—and still latch onto the three concrete modes of coordination I mentioned: strengthening lab-government partnerships to evaluate pre-release cyber risk; screening customers of DNA synthesis services; and establishing an ongoing U.S.-China dialogue mechanism. A lot can happen in four days, but at this point I expect both sides will agree to some AI dialogue mechanism as a key deliverable from the Trump-Xi summit.

Here is my best assessment of what the U.S. and Chinese sides will both ask for when Trump and Xi inevitably talk about “AI” at next week’s summit. There seems to be a narrow path to “coordination” that is both possible and desirable. choosingvictory.com/p/ai-coordinat…
