there's an important empirical question at the bottom of all this:
is it possible to distinguish in advance who will later regret transitioning versus who will go on to be happier for it? at, like, age 14
(I genuinely have no idea what the answer is)

If you don’t see that this is a nuanced situation, you should look at each post separately and with more scrutiny. I have always used people’s preferred pronouns and names, and treated people how they’ve signaled they want to be treated, and believe this is common decency. Plenty of people are fine with adult trans people but just don’t want it advertised to children, which can end up manifesting as a method of rebellion against their parents or an outlet for feeling like you “don’t fit in”. You can have both these opinions

@sonyasupposedly you can make many people desist from all kinds of behavior with force, social pressure, or loss of opportunity. i don't think you can meaningfully disentangle regret from the context people live in

yes, the question is not merely "who will desist" but "who *would have* desisted quietly absent medical intervention" or "whose gender dysphoria is resolvable by means other than transition"

@sonyasupposedly It’s also important to distinguish between the regret rate and whether or not it’s long-term beneficial to the person. People love to rationalize why a bad decision was actually harmless or net beneficial. If they say they regret something, then it was a *really* bad choice.
