@JackBMontgomery Edmund is a good choice, as would Cuthbert be. I was just thinking for the Roman period like Boudicca! You could rile up all the Irish and claim St Patrick as the Englishman he really is 👀

@thethomasfriday That's a very interesting choice. I was a bit concerned that my set didn't include any strong representation for British Christianity, although I had been leaning towards St. Edmund.

Where would you put a British Mount Rushmore, and who would you put on it? I let myself have six heads, as Britain has a longer history than America, and went for: 1. Boudicca, as an icon of Celtic Britain and the country's indomitable spirit 2. Alfred the Great, as an icon of the Anglo-Saxons and England's quasi-founding father 3. Robert the Bruce, as an icon of Scotland and the ancestor of today's Royal Family 4. Sir Isaac Newton, as probably the greatest mind the country has produced 5. Lord Admiral Nelson, as an icon of the country's naval prowess 6. Churchill, as an icon of the Victorians and the world wars Lots of people on the cutting room floor who deserved a place, but I wanted to get a good sweep of eras and themes.

The Church in England did not begin with Augustine of Canterbury or Henry VIII. Christianity was in Britain from the earliest centuries, long before Rome sent Augustine in 597 or the English Reformation under Henry VIII.

The 24th of May (Empire day) should be a national holiday in Britain. We ought to have a day in which we remember and celebrate the greatest Empire to ever grace this world. The Empire gave birth to nations like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, discovered and conquered uncivilised land and imposed our laws, morality and standards on uncivilised peoples. The British Empire is the greatest thing to ever happen to mankind and it is an honour to descend from those whom made it. Rule Britannia.
