Christmas came early for and me all the way from 1968. 🎄🎄🎄 The New York High Free Press was an underground newspaper started by students of the New York High School Student Union. In this first issue, you’ll find New York City high school students writing about the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the United Federation of Teachers’ racism, high school protests and more. I don’t know why but I feel encouraged after receiving this package and looking at some of the articles. It’s amazing how fearless youth can be in revolutionary times. It also proves what can be done or improved upon. Like recipes and blueprints. Hey, what would it look like if students from different high schools today formed a union to create content, or news, about issues that mattered to them?

For every single progressive cause I’ve ever worked on, Jews have been there helping lead the fight. Women’s rights. Housing rights. Black Lives Matter. Trans rights. And I always kind of just took that presence for granted - never really thought about. I think a lot of us did. There’s been a lot of discussion about how Muslim voters might not go with Biden over I/P and it’s fair. There’s been a lot of discussion about how Black voters might not go with Biden over I/P and it’s also fair. But, it’s also true that Jews have options in how they vote, who they vote for, and how committed they are to showing up for others. And many of them feel outright betrayed right now. I don’t give a damn about Netanyahu, and it’s increasingly impossible to say anything in defense of where the Israel Hamas war is going. I am strongly against it. But that’s another country. Here at home we’re taking our Jewish neighbors for granted in the Democratic Party. And I’m increasingly worried we will not notice them until they’re gone.
