It was an absolute privilege for me to meet you, finally, James. And, WHAT A SPEECH you made, I'm still choked by it. Love to meet up again sometime for a #treehunt around the region maybe, all the best, Rob

I went out today with the intention of seeing my first Adder, and Brimstone butterfly, and hopefully getting a record shot. I succeeded, and got a bonus Common Lizard, by the heap of Adders (at least 2, possibly 3).

It is very difficult to know what to say about this. I have been trying to warn people for decades, that what will do for our present system, is biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse. And this will severely impact us in the near future, not the big physical climate impacts, like sea level rise, at the end of the century. What this assessment has told me, is that anyone can understand this if they read the relevant reports, like the @IPBES Global Assessment in 2019, but bizarrely it went over the heads of most people. My warnings weren't derived from mysticism, but from scientific assessments of biodiversity and ecosystems, and because I'm a graduate in scientific ecology. What has thrown my about this, is the surprise at this report's findings. This was all clear to anyone 30 years ago, if they had their eyes open. I'm aware how little ecological and biodiversity understanding there is in our culture, but I had no realized just how bad it was, and that hardly anyone understands just how reliant we are on biodiversity and natural ecosystems. That although this was being reported, that most people in influential and powerful positions, were just ignoring the reporting. theguardian.com/environment/20…

A few things are now certain - "it" is going to happen - mainly because they don't want you to know it's going to happen. And when it does, in two parallel universes, there will be two radical divergent paths. In one, the hatred of the self, of life, of the agony of consciousness will double down on itself - we will go extinct. In the other, the love of the self, of life, of the ecstasy of consciousness will create the greatest rupture of redemption and forgiveness - and we will not go extinct. The last thing which is certain is that if you ask which path it will be, then you are asking the wrong question. The only question is how you want to live your life at the end of the world. Love has no aim other than itself. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Cut blackthorn hedges less often = boost brown hairstreak butterflies. Really simple, cost-free (or even money-saving) measures can massively benefit wildlife: theguardian.com/environment/20…

I had to spend my 35th birthday at home, isolating with Covid, so I decided to spend the day planting 35 black poplar trees. Five’s years later & a dozen of these trees survived & they’re starting to get massive: outgrowing the local lampposts & almost ready to climb! As I turn 40 tomorrow, I decided to repeat the exercise, planting 40 trees (18 blank poplar & 22 willow). Digging into the wet, silty mud beside the river, it was hard work, but immensely satisfying to mark the passage of time & a big life transition by giving a gift to the river, and not just receiving.

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. Yet more charlatans being exposed today this time a so called river charity The Rivers Trust. Last year @Northhumberian was allowed by Ofwat to put up customers bills by a whopping 21% but that wasn't enough for this particular greedy water company oh no, they have appealed to the @CMAgovUK their corporate self-interest demanding that they be allowed to charge customers even more. Northumbrian Water you will remember is a company that has paid out almost £4.5 BILLION in dividends since privatisation, has loaded with the company with almost £5 BILLION in debt and currently almost 20 pence of every pound of customer's bill is used to do nothing but pay interest on that steaming pile of debt. In 2023 the company paid shareholders £396 for every hour they spent dumping sewage into the environment, the 4th highest rate in England. To cap it all off last year the company was fined £15.7 MILLION for how it "operated and maintained some of its sewage works and networks, which has resulted in excessive spills from storm overflows", That is Ofwat speak for illegally dumping sewage due to corporate greed, simply paying their shareholders instead of investing in their infrastructure. And here we have it The Rivers Trust, enthusiastically supporting Northumbrian Water's application to the CMA, to be allowed to fleece customers even more, to raise even more debt and send even more big fat dividends to waiting expectant offshore bank accounts. WHAT A FRAUD.
