Michael Carrick turned a potentially disastrous #MUFC season into one that delivered more than Champions League football. The squad is more content, the majority of players are playing in positions they feel comfortable with, and the supporters are behind the team, coaching staff and head coach. At any level, recruitment is so important. Last summer was arguably the best since Sir Alex Ferguson/David Gill’s departure. This window presents a different challenge. My belief is that Elliot Anderson is too expensive and probably heading elsewhere. Progress is being made with Ederson, and if someone like Mateus Fernandes, Alex Scott or another joins them, United will still need that Aurélien Tchouaméni, Sandro Tonali (also unlikely), level signing. So, four central midfielders, one being Kobbie Mainoo, plus three new signings (especially if Manuel Ugarte moves on). The balance has to be better in there. We saw a few concerning moments in and out of possession. My hope is that the above all bring different skills, boost the squad, and can compete across four competitions. We’ve seen, unsurprisingly, what Bruno Fernandes brings playing higher up the pitch, and he shouldn’t be moved from there (unless there’s an injury crisis). Luke Shaw has been very consistent and present in 25/26. A left back to challenge him is a must, as is a younger/commanding central defender who is less prone to injury. It will be interesting to see who they think can support Benjamin Sesko. A striker (not Robert Lewandowski 38 in August) who can share some of the load would be helpful. I’m told the coaching team see Patrick Dorgu as a wide player and not a left back, so that will save some £ in that area of the pitch. It’s nice not to have to mention the ‘keeper situation, and we must be grateful to Tony Coton for picking out the relatively unknown Senne Lammens. The level of detail they went into before securing him was incredibly thorough, to say the least. The list of players who will leave or are available for transfer is more obvious, and that will contribute to the overall budget of course. Just a few of my thoughts as we head into the window and a couple of points to consider.

Pleased for Carrick. I was 100% against him getting it on a permanent basis when he first took over, but he’s done really well, and it feels different to when Solskjaer was offered the job on a full-time basis. I think the existing coaching team plus whoever Carrick chooses to add (believe he will), will be important. I didn’t think Arteta was capable of getting near a Premier League title when he took over at Arsenal. I wish him well, it’s a proud moment for him and his family. He will be backed completely by the supporters. And rightly so.

Nice end to the season at Old Trafford for #MUFC and Casemiro. The Brazilian probably didn’t fully understand what he was walking into four years ago - but the connection/bond with the club and supporters has grown through highs and lows. Official Carrick announcement isn’t far away I’m told, which is another positive. All eyes on the recruitment team now. Who do you think the club should sign?

I know Elliot Anderson is the preferred midfield choice for many, but if Pep is leaving City, which is being reported this evening, I wonder if that gives #MUFC a better chance of securing him.

Carrick in programme: “We know there is still a lot left to play for but we can be proud of the position we have put ourselves in to be able to finish the season strongly and get this club closer to where it should be.” #MUFC

What a night! It was the way #MUFC won the treble in ‘99 that made it so special.

Whoever #MUFC sign, it can’t be allowed to rumble on late into the window. Could negatively impact rest of the squad. World Cup complicates things as well. If it is Tonali, he’d be a far better option than Wharton imo. Anderson probably heading to the blue half of Manchester.

Is #grassroots football the heartbeat of the game? Whether you’re a parent, have played, coach, refereed, or supported a local club, I’d like to hear about your #grassroots experience. Good/bad/indifferent. Personal view changing given what I see and hear. Will share more.

It doesn’t have to be so drastic. #MUFC didn’t play well last night, but they’ve improved hugely since Carrick took over. If Champions League football is secured, it will be difficult for INEOS to appoint someone else, given the lack of options elsewhere.

#YCFC 2 #Shaymen 0. Visitors started well, but two quick goals from the hosts (who haven’t been at their best), means they’re now in control. The second, from Hunt, particularly impressive.
