On this day, 10th May 1975, the first home videocassette recorder, the Sony Betamax, went on sale in Japan. The following year JVC released their rival VHS (Video Home System). Betamax was more expensive to make and service, and VHS came to define TV viewing in the 80s. #80s

On this day, 28th March 1995, Kodak released the DC40 digital camera. Essentially the same (Chinon) device as the Apple QuickTake 100, Kodak's own marketing efforts helped wipe-out their film processing business and the tradition of collecting family snapshots in shoeboxes.

#OTD January 26, 1983, Lotus Development Corporation released Lotus 1-2-3 for IBM computers. Although computerised ledgers were pioneered by VisiCalc, they failed to patent the idea, and Lotus 1-2-3 went on to power the home computing boom until the arrival of Microsoft Office.
