@roskosmos @newskag Great attitude👏It's unfortunate things aren't running smooth but students feed off the teacher's vibe. Sounds like you are motivating the Ss simply by making it work. Without materials you have the freedom to do what you feel is most beneficial and enjoyable. Good luck!

@newskag I’m doing my first summer program over at Dick. It’s been a bit of a logistical issue with materials but you make it work. The kids are so happy to be there and it’s energizing to be back in front of them

With millions in federal recovery funds, #PHLed is running the largest summer school in recent memory. Teachers, parents and students say some sites have no supplies, not enough staff and other glitches. inquirer.com/news/philadelp…

@MrsRazzaqMath @dr_ezad @GiftedTawk 2 ideas that I find very beneficial in application style projects. 1) Make the goal to find an answer to a challenge, not to solve a math problem. 2) Require some exact answers but leave room for student creativity. I've seen this level the playing field & boost enjoyment.

@CreativeRawNRG If she would like a month long story based project that's a combination of math + critical thinking, check out thinkmatics.org. It might be challenging for a 6th grader but she'll get to learn a lot about new math topics!

🔥 HOT TAKE 🔥: Most schools have multiple reading specialist, but it seems like many schools don't have the same for mathematics. If the US wants to close the gap on mathematics with other countries we should spend the same effort on math as well do reading. #iteachmath

@Dean_of_math Find a couple aspects of your life that you enjoy or are looking to improve. Can you use math, in some way, to understand these aspects of your life? If so, you'll be doing the one thing most math teachers don't, create their own math. You'll have a cool activity to do w/ Ss!

Okay. I want to learn about algebra and geometry and number theory and…well Let’s start there. I did five years of math in High School. I did a year of applied math at Uni. But I’m only know discovering math as it really is. Where do I start?!

@JodieField1 @ailvox71 @JoelBSperanza Interesting. I'm curious if the professional has to teach standard curriculum or through real life projects that use math as a tool? An example of what I mean: Data analyst - Class is 6 projects, each project has a math curriculum. Ss learn the math concept and how to apply it.

@thinkerdm @ailvox71 @JoelBSperanza I believe that’s what we’re doing in NSW now. One of our current promotions is extracting professionals with ‘real life’ experience from their career, putting them through a fast tracked uni Ed course, then in front of students. 🤞their experience translates well to a classroom.

I spoke to a head of maths yesterday who told me 16 of her 20 maths teachers aren't maths trained! What are we going to do about this?

@ailvox71 @JoelBSperanza ...solve problems. I say this b/c I went to engineering school, worked for 10 yrs, then became a teacher. It's difficult to teach applied math is you haven't experienced it. Society needs all types of math teachers, but enticing people with real life experience seems invaluable!

@ailvox71 @JoelBSperanza So you essentially have a degree in applied math without a cert to say you do. Science/econ/legal on top of it. If the education system hired ONLY people like you and gave them a semester of student teaching, there would be a natural shift in Ed to teach math as a tool to help..

@chrismanfrank Synthesis brings optimism for the future of Ed. BUT at P-T conferences, parents #1 concern is grades b/c getting into university is the goal. How do we change the Ed system if parents feel this way? Do we need Uni admission reform to drive real change (top down) for the masses?

@SelenaCarrion Need, depend, nuture, often blurry lines. I've had students look to me for none or all 3. The hard part is making a large group of Ss feel they can get what they need when they want it. Honestly I never found a magic way of doing this other than an atmosphere where Ss support Ss.

@kathsoweni @MrJames_MH @Rethinking_Ed Unfortunately schools don't know how to quantify growth in life. My guess is the happiness and engagement of students would increase...a lot. Accelerate the real life learning process. Shadow an architect for a day. Have a professional explain the importance of a math concept!

@markwarschauer @DTWillingham @latimes If a "ratings system" was derived through data collected from insights of the kids playing the games, sounds useful to me. Gamified educational supplements (especially in math) are exploding in use. I'd like to think we'd start asking kids for their opinions.

@DavidKButlerUoA Saying "from experience" for lack of better words is a lazy response. Critical Thinking + Math I believe a lot of students are not getting the important part of the story. Being able to know 'what you should do' and 'when to do it' always comes before how to solve the math.

Alternatively, instead of just saying “from experience”, you could think about how you actually do decide, and what features of the situations help you to distinguish between them, and tell your students that.

When a student asks you how you choose which method to use, and your whole advice is “from experience”, and you expect them to still choose correctly anyway, then you’d better make sure you’ve engineered a lot of practice and reflection time in order to gain this experience.

@SelenaCarrion I've taught Ss from "marginalized communities" at elite private schools. These Ss flourished when the expectation was that ALL students will do great things. To me, a student feeling optimistic about their future is the magic ticket. Raising test scores isn't life changing.

@thinkerdm @GiftedTawk Indeed. I was also thinking organizing math subjects in a different way. Instead of Algebra 1, 2, etc. I'm thinking more along the lines of Math for Physics, Math for Economists, Math for Statisticians, Math for Actuaries, etc. Most math is very specific to certain professions.

@MandiTolenEDU How much of a factor (in your mind) to "making math not suck in MS/HS" is switching over to applied math from computation without context? Synthesis school is an example of flipping math education on it's head. Do you think not sucking will = student centered math application?

@dr_ezad @GiftedTawk ...and a data-driven report based on evidence. Then their curiosity of how to create, use, and communicate the other metrics will take over. It allows students to work to their level while accelerating their math application and critical thinking skills.

@dr_ezad @GiftedTawk I've found success in not even mentioning math in the title. Lesson: Pick you starting 11 (Soccer) Allow the Ss to discover data analysis! They will figure out that goals, assists, km run, passes, are data points. Pick an Ex. xA (expected assists) metric, explain the function...
