🚨NEW BOOK ALERT🚨
The Summer of 2020 shocked me. For going on five years now, I have felt the need to understand how and why the combination of a live-streamed global pandemic, an unprecedented mass response to the wrenching, videotaped death of a single man in Minneapolis (also global in scope), and the punishing reelection campaign of a singularly deranging president somehow weaved together to affect what seemed like every aspect of our collective lives. A deceptively simple quote from Camus has stayed with me: "I have seen people behave badly with great morality."
From one day to the next in May of 2020, our media, cultural, political, academic and elite corporate institutions were in lockstep thrall to what seemed like a genuine cult of what was in theory "antiracism" and "social justice" but in practice felt more like the polar opposites of both. (Societies throughout the Westernized world, with completely different histories and values, then attempted to mimic this American example.) We are still reeling from the furious and terribly illiberal backlash this has sparked.
So in the spring of 2021 I set out to write a book that would make sense of the complicated and often paradoxical mix of ideas and events that culminated in that season of upheaval, as well as the ongoing impact they––and the reaction to them––continue to produce, right up through the tent encampments on college campuses in 2024. I felt the need to bear witness to what we've all been living through, so much of which is still being memory-holed right now. The resulting book, SUMMER OF OUR DISCONTENT: THE AGE OF CERTAINTY AND THE DEMISE OF DISCOURSE will be published by @AAKnopf on August 5, 2025.
I'm thrilled to share the cover with you now. Whatever your politics, I hope you will find these arguments both engaging and provocative (in the best, most productive way). And if you are able to do it, it makes an enormous difference to an author when you pre-order a book to help ensure its strong release🙏🏽.
SUMMER OF OUR DISCONTENT is now available for pre-order wherever books are sold (there will be an audio version as well): penguinrandomhouse.com/books/704632/s…

I wrote about the soul-sucking labor of self-promotion and "audience building" that basically every artist/journalist/creative worker has to do now ... unless they are very lucky vox.com/culture/2024/2…

@JeffSharlet @haaretzcom for sure. Impressive reporting in an unprecedented moment that’s hard to imagine from a US media equivalent.
