Only 70 men in all of Japan are allowed to give this autograph. The wrestlers themselves can't sell them. And the day a wrestler retires, that's the last one he'll ever sign. Sumo has six divisions and a few hundred professional wrestlers. But only the men in the top two divisions can make tegata, which works out to exactly 70 wrestlers. The right is tied to rank. If a wrestler drops to a lower division, he can't make them anymore. The handprint is half the autograph. The other half is the wrestler's ring name, written in his own brush calligraphy on a stiff white board about the size of a piece of letter paper. Ring names in sumo go back to the 1500s. Many of the early wrestlers were masterless samurai (ronin), and the ring names let them hide who they really were. Look closely at a tegata and you'll often see one to three small red stamps. Three usually means the wrestler was a grand champion, two means he reached the second-highest rank, and one is for upper-tier wrestlers. Tegata without stamps usually come from early in a wrestler's career, before promotion. These early tegata from future legends are especially prized by collectors. The size of the hand is part of the record too. Akebono, the first foreign-born grand champion, stood 6'8" and weighed 514 pounds, while Konishiki peaked at 633 pounds, one of the heaviest in sumo history. Onosato, promoted to grand champion in 2025 at age 24, is now 25, 6'4", and 412 pounds. A tegata captures how big these men were at the exact moment they signed. All of this locks the supply. An authentic Hakuho handprint sells for $120 to $220 on the secondary market today. Hakuho was a grand champion and one of the highest-paid sumo wrestlers ever, earning close to $2 million a year at his peak. Tegata from legends like Chiyonofuji are collected like art. Sumo became a formal professional sport in 1684. Wrestlers were already celebrities back then. Their portraits showed up on woodblock prints the same way baseball cards work today. The handprint just made the autograph impossible to fake. You can copy a signature. You can't fake the size of a 400-pound man's hand.

This is one of those photos that's just really incredible. The dichotomy and contrast between the modern and the less modern. In black and white really drives it home. Also, would be much less beautiful in ultra-clear digital. The grain makes it dreamy.
