Soy un peregrino. I love my family, my friends, and my church. I’m a pastor and I wrote The Anglican Way. Y'all get vaccinated!

It's a lot easier to judge people when you don't know them.

@thomasmckenzie I heard someone in a service I watched a few weeks ago say you are going to walk the Camino. I was in Santiago de Compostela, summer of 2019. It was so inspiring to see the joy of the peregrinos when they completed their long journey. I hope you love it! Buen Camino!

Today is my last day of work before my sabbatical begins. I’m excited about my upcoming travels, but I know I’ll miss my community. I feel sadness and some anxiety as I prepare for this morning’s Eucharists.

@thomasmckenzie I don’t disagree. There’s a difference between “making a law” and strongly advocating and articulating a position. Easier for me to do perhaps than for you as a minister.

Pastors and “religious exemptions,” a thread. Several years ago I was approached by a family in our church. This is a family that no longer attends, but I still love very much and am in close contact with. They told me that their eldest child was about to start in a new school.

@timrwebb63 Yes. I tell the school that I disagreed with them, but it was a sincerely held belief. Let the school decide what to do with that information.

@thomasmckenzie I will play devil's advocate. Would this interaction be different if you had a family that believed the Earth is flat and wished to opt out of Geography lessons. Extreme example I know.

@preston_shipp @DavidDark @RNS What reorientation is God calling for from us pro-vax, pro-mask people? How do WE need to change in order to bring about reconciliation and a healthier nation? That's the question we should be asking, removing the logs in our own eyes.

Helpful thread. I hope @RNS & other news outlets inquire so we can know which pastors in which church organizations are providing parishioners paperwork with which to terrorize others & morally degrade their own children. Thank you for your witness, @thomasmckenzie.

Maybe the biggest problem Americans have is our self-righteousness.

@thomasmckenzie @DavidDark @LivedTheology I’m not a Bonhoeffer scholar. But I have been reading him for over 30 years, which I suspect is worth something. I don’t mean to misappropriate his metaphor. We are approaching 700,000 dead in America alone. The moral weight cannot be dismissed.

@davidvassar I think it's a good way to love your neighbor, and I have often said so; but making new laws based on old laws is the way of the Pharisee.

@thomasmckenzie Does Jesus’ words enlighten the 10 commandments? I also can’t see how a pastor can’t say that getting vaccine and masking is indeed in line with Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself.

We have to challenge them, not agree with them, but respect and love them all the same. Our oneness is in Christ, not social or political controversy.

I think that’s where we are now. For a Christian pastor to say that our faith excepts people from masks or vaccines is a violation of the Third Commandment. It’s a misuse of the Name of God. And, we might have people in our congregation who disagree.

*nods* I don’t think confronting an unhinged person is shaming them. I think it’s baseline moral seriousness among adults. I don’t propose that @GovBillLee & pastors who write letters requesting a religious exemption for abusive congregants are behaving wickedly. I know they are.
Thomas McKenzie@thomasmckenzie

@aimeechor @DavidDark Propositional love: wearing masks is generally loving, therefore i demand you wear a mask and shame you if you don’t. Relational love: I love these specific people so I’m going to wear a mask, and lovingly encourage others to do the same.
