I’m a resident doctor and I’ll be going out on strike from April 7th. Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer have removed 1,000 extra NHS specialist training jobs; a decision that means fewer potential consultants and GPs, and potentially longer waits for patients in the future. This not only harms doctors, it harms the public and the NHS as a whole. But this isn’t just about those 1,000 posts. It’s also about the bigger picture and what it symbolises. Doctors’ pay has been cut in real terms for over a decade, and resident doctors are still earning 21% less in real terms than a doctor in 2008. There are now far more doctors than speciality training posts, so thousands of doctors can’t progress in their careers to become specialists even though the NHS desperately needs more of them. Last year around 40,000 doctors applied for about 10,000 specialist training posts. Instead of expanding speciality training posts to tackle waiting lists, the number of potential future specialists is being reduced by this Labour Government. At the same time, during negotiations, the Government reduced the investment that had been discussed and spread it over three years instead. So we’re in a situation where pay is still down in real terms, training bottlenecks are rife across the NHS, and the number of potential future specialists is being reduced. That’s why I’m going out on strike with @BMAResidents.

🚨 UPDATE: UK government axes 1,000 doctor training places after BMA strike confirmed Starmer threatened: call off the six-day strike from April 7 or lose the extra posts. ❌ The BMA quite rightly refused to negotiate with terrorists. Now the 1,000 new specialty training places have been pulled. ✂️ I rest my case: The government can create thousands more doctors to cut the waiting lists - or snatch them away on a whim. This isn't “no money left.” It's a political choice. They can fix NHS staffing when it suits them. They simply choose not to. 👎

Tonight, @Keir_Starmer and @wesstreeting have decided to cut the number of offered specialist training jobs for doctors. Doctors need these jobs to train to become the specialist Consultants and GPs of the future that the NHS so desperately needs. Instead, this Government has decided to make it harder for you to see a specialist and is effectively holding doctors’ jobs hostage. We are already an under-doctored country compared to other OECD countries. In 2025, around 40,000 doctors applied for just 10,000 speciality training jobs. That means tens of thousands of qualified doctors ready to train, ready to work, and ready to treat patients are being turned away every year. The Government can train more specialist doctors when they want to. They are simply choosing not to. Remember this the next time you can’t get an appointment or your surgery is delayed.
