@ThatMoviePage The cloud tank was created by Scott Squires, assistant to Douglas Trumbull ( 2001: a space odyssey, Blade Runner). The tank had 2 layers of water, salty on bottom, fresh floating on top. Tempura paint was injected above the salt water line creating clouds in the fresh water only.

This effect is used multiple times throughout Close Encounters and it still looks awesome 50 years later.

Notice how the vast majority of accomplishments on this list are pre-70’s/New Democrats.
