@moriko38 There were some intense Jurchen vs Ming-Joseon wars in the 1470s and 1580s, but I haven't read of significant conflict in the time between them

@n30n5223434 Osprey were lazy in this picture, they got the shield reference from a blockprint and then thought the shields were black and white in real life lol

After a miscommunication issue, Dutch VOC assumed Zhilong had reneged on a previous trade agreement, and they burned down the ships in a surprise attack. This move was very unexpected. The Zheng clansmen actually seemed to welcome the Dutch in before they opened fire.

Zheng Zhilong was one of the earliest admirals in China to attempt to replicate a European style fleet (1633)

@oomineyamato @Chinaswordbot Another way is to look at the broad lines of movement. In the 2nd invasion, the Ming retreated several times from vicinity of the coastal forts, but they weren't driven out of the country entirely. They camped in south Korea and could stop any attempt to break out from the forts

@oomineyamato @Chinaswordbot a stalemate developed. Since they were unable to exit the southern coastline of Korea, the Japanese then returned home.

@SecondRingSZN The 2023 HDI data is insane. Beijing, at 0.912, is the most developed region by far, but 30 minutes outside the city and Hebei has an HDI equivalent to Ecuador. It’s been lapped by Shaanxi, Xinjiang, and Inner fucking Mongolia. This is laughable. Why is Hebei such a shithole?!

@n30n5223434 @EmperorShun1 He also accidentally burned down the palace because of his mock battles and hunts x.com/threeeyedbarre…
Red Barbarian@threeeyedbarrel

@SteppeShaman Wuzong/Zhengde invited Mongols and Tibetans to the court, built yurts in the Forbidden City, and organized mock battles there. At one point, a gunpowder accident burned down the palace. In response to the crying officials, he just said "that is one damn big fire" and rode away

@Blue001831598 @zhnguchnqi2 Very interesting. I have a few questions. My understanding then is -> Takeda decline -> western infantry defeat them -> but then Toyotomi wins at the end? Which side did Kanto plains horsemen choose for Sekigahara? And I think Hojo also ruled part of Kanto, what happened to them?

@threeeyedbarrel @zhnguchnqi2 The Takeda clan had already fallen from its former glory by this point, Nagashino importance is also often overstated factors attribute to defeat such as They barely had any scout reports.

@zhnguchnqi2 Maybe individually a Takeda cavalryman was formidable. But it seems they had some doctrine issue with mass charging. Sengoku paintings also show cavalry are frequently dispersed among squads

@zhnguchnqi2 There is a lot of cope in the replies to the "Swadian Butter" person quoted by OP, although Swadian is also irresponsible with number exaggeration. There is a source for Nagashino that reports the Takeda charging in groups of 30 and 50 rather than a cordon charge

@bodenlosig 1560s marked the beginning of a turnaround for the economy and military, the 1630s was when it became hopeless imo

Just read someone from the late Ming (1560s) trying to cheer up a comrade saying that “in the future, they’ll look on our time like the Three Dynasties [the golden age]”. Sorry but none of us think that about you. We all think your time was pretty much the worst ever.

@MeathGuerilla I am also thinking of the time where he made a typo that inserted a 0 at the end of a Chinese source on casualty number, compared it with a Korean source that had the original number, and then claimed Ming exaggerated numbers by 10 times more compared to Joseon

@MeathGuerilla Hawley generally reconstructs events in a similar way to Swope, and has better info about Japanese army. He is intentionally misleading about certain things though, like reusing Turnbull's account for Byeokjegwan even though he says Turnbull's book is inaccurate
