My mother made something she called “breaded tomatoes.” It was canned crushed tomatoes heated on the stove, then torn pieces of plain white bread stirred in right before serving. The bread turned soft… slick… almost gluey. As a 4 y/o, I had such a strong reaction the first time I was forced to eat it, (what goes down, sometimes comes up). Lesson learned. What’s funny is, this is basically a rough cousin of traditional Italian dishes, like panzanella, where you mix fresh tomatoes, good olive oil, herbs, and sturdy day-old bread. But the difference is everything. Italy: fresh ingredients, texture, balance. My childhood: canned tomatoes + store bread = depression era holdover. Same concept. Very different outcomes. One is rustic cuisine. The other… let’s just say it gave new meaning to cleaning up after dinner.

I didn’t even know this was a thing. Texture vs. taste: have you ever disliked a food purely because of how it feels, even though the flavor was actually good?

Reinforcing negative neural pathways via therapy or introspection is a recipe for misery. Don’t cut a rut in the road.
