…because often you need to specify racial origin due to specific race-based nuances within a broader group. Dismissing a term just because you personally haven’t encountered it doesn’t erase its existence, necessity, or use in contexts you may not be familiar with.

Totally fair that personal identity within the Caribbean is by island/nationality first. However, multiple people have pointed out already that “Afro-Caribbean” is mainly an academic term used in especially in fields like history, political science, sociology, etc…
Ju 🦩@whoz_thatChick

Last thing imma say about this Afro/ Caribbean thing… is that people who are genuinely from the Caribbean do not refer to themselves as that. We say I am from *Inserts island here* then if someone doesn’t know where that is we say “its in the Caribbean” ..

I remember being breathless reading that many of the people on the trains to the concentration camps thought the rumors in the ghettos of the gas chambers and forced slavery in the camps were lies up until the MOMENT they arrived

You cannot understand the climate crisis if you don’t understand colonialism. You cannot understand colonialism if you don’t understand capitalism. Everything is connected. There is a subtle fabric of oppression that links every form of suffering around the world.

Hey so, I'm a vegan, and I have spent a good portion of my life helping animals, so I hope that you hear me when I say I find it monstrous to even attempt to judge the eating and hunting habits of people experiencing an active genocide. They are being intentionally starved.

we’ll get somewhere when people stop looking at creole languages as something that’s broken, and in need of fixing. whose fixing? whose approval?

You does have to romanticize your life, play like you in your own movie I on a bus passing by the beach, staring out at the sun above the water... Sam Smith playing & I catch myself smiling Narrator "she was down bad. No job, no man, no car. But what she did have was hope..."

Quiet as it’s kept.. yh. I’m not sure why the term upsets yall. No we don’t use it commonly, it’s mostly used in academic and international spaces. but it’s a very unproblematic, self explanatory term. Black folks from the Caribbean. What’s hard
Ashley@undamipengting

It's very interesting to me that Black Caribbean people have an issue with the term AfroCaribbean but no one bats an eye at IndoCaribbean. Like why are y'all spiraling?

I'm curious whether he grapples with the fact that in order to be in his bubble, he had to consciously ignore everything that other Black people had said about race in America for his entire life until his adopted daughter experienced it directly.

Religious people will describe heaven as a classless, stateless, moneyless society with no private property, no suffering, and everyone’s needs met, then turn around and call communism evil. It will never stop being funny.
