We poisoned 98% of North America's prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets nearly went extinct. Burrowing owls, black-footed ferrets, swift foxes, rattlesnakes, tiger salamanders, insects, and dozens of bird species all depend on prairie dog towns. We did it because ranchers believed prairie dogs competed with cattle for grass. Studies have since shown that prairie dog grazing actually improves forage quality and cattle weight gain. The grazing-competition story was wrong. By the time we'd figured that out, prairie dog populations had been reduced from billions to a few percent of their historical range. The USDA still funds lethal control programs on public lands. They are routinely shot for sport and their cousins, Utah prairie dogs, and Mexican prairie dogs, are endangered. If you live in a state with prairie dogs, push your state wildlife agency to end recreational shooting and require non-lethal management on public land. Support groups doing on-the-ground work: the Prairie Dog Coalition, WildEarth Guardians, Defenders of Wildlife. If you're a landowner, don't let agricultural extension push you toward poison. We invented the problem by killing them. We can start fixing it by letting them dig.

A man in Kenya drove 3,000 gallons of water to help wild animals after seeing elephants and buffaloes collapsing from thirst. He did not wait for help or permission… he saw a problem and acted immediately. He did this so many times to the point that most animals would recognise the sound of his lorry and wait for him at the drinking point! When he started doing this, no organization or government supported him! Only few friends would encourage him.

FROM FB: Sometimes you meet a dog who has had to overcome more than most people. ❤️‍🩹 But still has a shining spirit. And you don’t forget that. I took Flame out when he first got to the shelter the first time. He was freshly off a surgery so he had a cone on, and was more difficult to leash because of this than other dogs. But I passed by and knew something was special about him and took the time anyways to gently leash him and let him get some sunshine. Even dogs in cones deserve a walk and sun on their face. This was months ago. But I’m really glad I did. Months after this, last week actually, I was watching dog assessments at the shelter. Flame came out for his. I couldn’t believe he was 1) back in the shelter and 2) the same dog from months before. He aced his assessment. Again I just knew this dog was special so I decided to leave the shelter and take him out for the day. He was so happy. He got to greet women, men and children and was even unbothered by many dogs around. He enjoyed laying in the grass listening to a live band. But that’s not his reality. That was one lucky day. He deserves more every single day. Right now Flame is at the shelter in his kennel. He doesn’t know it, but he is way up high on the at risk of euthanasia list. He’s too good of a dog to not be in a family showing it off. Too much love he has to spend it all in a kennel. Please meet Flame before he’s urgent. Every use of a leaf blower is a massacre. The stream of air from a handheld leaf blower comes out between 180 and 200 miles per hour. That's enough to shred caterpillars, strip butterfly eggs off leaves, and fling overwintering bees, fireflies, ladybugs, and moths into the street. A chickadee needs 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to raise one brood. They overwinter in the leaf litter that falls ever autumn. The leaf litter your neighbor is blowing to the curb is next summer's songbird food. And on top of it, leaf blower emissions are their own category of bad. Running a two-stroke gas leaf blower for 30 minutes produces roughly the same hydrocarbon pollution as driving a car 1,100 miles. California and a growing list of cities have banned them outright. Germany's environment ministry told citizens not to use them unless "indispensable." Is it time for a total ban?

Migrating fish in Utrecht were getting stuck at a canal lock. Two ecologists fixed the problem with a doorbell. It's called the Visdeurbe, or the "fish doorbell." Every spring, fish migrate through the city's canals to spawn in shallow upstream waters. But the old Weerdsluis lock, built in the 1600s, stays mostly closed in early spring because boat traffic is low. Fish pile up against the gate with nowhere to go. Predators find them, and many don't make it. Two ecologists in Utrecht had an idea. Put an underwater camera on the lock, livestream it, and let anyone on Earth press a digital doorbell when they see fish waiting. The lock keeper opens the gate when enough people have rung in. In 2024, the doorbell was pressed 150,000 times by viewers from Germany, the US, the Netherlands, the UK, and dozens of other countries. Over 20 million people tuned in to watch. Thousands of fish got through: perch, bream, pike, rudd, catfish, even eels. You don't have to live in Utrecht to help. Someone broke into a Northern California falconry education and conservation center early Friday and intentionally released all of its birds, several of which are still missing and at risk, according to West Coast Falconry. Staff at the falconry — located about 40 miles north of Sacramento in Marysville — found the premises vandalized and all 11 birds set free. The intruder or intruders destroyed equipment and merchandise, and released the birds by cutting gear from their legs and removing them from their enclosures, “leaving them to fend for themselves,” the organization said. “These birds are not wild — they are trained and rely on human care,” West Coast Falconry said in a Facebook post. “Releasing them in this condition puts them at serious risk of injury or death.” Four birds were still missing as of midday Sunday: Walter, a great horned owl; Cubbie, a peregrine falcon; Amadon, a barn owl; and Cora, a dark-morph red-tailed hawk who is blind in one eye. The center said it was actively working to locate and recover the missing raptors, and asked for help from nearby residents to look out for birds who are “unusually comfortable around people.” People should not approach the raptors, but instead should report any sightings to West Coast Falconry. 📸: Courtesy of West Coast Falconry
