In 2022 I looked broken. Bags under my eyes. Burnt out. £145k per year job, but no life left in me. So I quit. I started a Substack to write about financial markets. 6 months in, I’d made £0. I was ready to give up and get another job… when an email pinged: “New paid subscriber.” £15 per month. It felt better than the £11k paychecks from my 9–5. I kept going. 10 subs later, I was writing 30k words for £150/month. Long hours. Struggling to pay bills. So I cut the newsletter down to 2k words. Thats the reality of today's attention economy: fleeting moments, zero staying power. Viral doesn’t build profitability because the audience has already moved on and thats why people are turning back to nostalgia. RuneScape just hit an all time high in active users. CS2 skins are trading at record valuations. Because unlike disposable content, nostalgia compounds, it endures and it means something. If you’re an investor, thats the pattern.
