@jazl1yn Most films don't do extensive rehearsals. You actually want to try and capture the first take, fresh, without feedback from the director--because that's the ONLY time you'll ever get that performance. Once the director says anything, the performance changes.

I've been doing my annual LotR reread, and have been SO in the mood to run a Middle-earth RPG game. But which one to use? MERP? Lord of the Rings RPG? The One Ring? The answer was: none and all of them. Hacked my own retroclone for today's session. Details in comment ⤵️

@JazzElves Thanks for writing this. As someone who has a metacurrency in their game and struggled hugely with implementing it (but eventually landed on something I loved) and who hates 5e's vibes-based Inspiration, this was enlightening.

You lean into the genre conventions because you CAN and because you WANT TO, not because it's mechanically optimal.

Fighting off panic attacks, so let's let this thought train rip. In the early 2000's, there was a design trend for RPGs to offer mechanical benefits in exchange for acting in line with the flavor of the game, setting, session, or even situation. These came in a variety of style.

Random mechanic: Some people don't like bennies because they feel players hoard them thinking they'll need them later. But what if spending bennies was how you leveled up stats? Spend a benny 10 times on strength checks, you gain +1 strength after the 10th time.

@CypressDahlia I hope it doesnt. I think it's great to cram this kind of sick (positive) body horror and monster design into what is ostensibly for 6 year olds, because they'll carry that for the rest of their lives.

I hope that sentai/"Power Rangers" eventually escapes its branding as a kids show cuz it is basically an endless resource for creature design. Without context, these could fit into a horror or action game easily. And there are hundreds of them.
