left-wing critics love call Merz a populist, but his current stance on the pension and welfare system is the exact opposite. he is doing something British politicians are pathologically incapable of: telling the blunt truth, that its just mathematics and demographics.

The careless decision to reduce our force posture in Europe, along with moves by Pete Hegseth and his political henchmen to force out some of our finest general officers is amateur hour at best and deadly at worst. Hegseth continues to surprise and disrespect our greatest allies and some of our best military professionals with impulsive decisions not grounded in reality or good judgment. If the rumors are true that Hegseth is trying to sideline General Chris Donahue, one of our nation’s finest warfighters, by downgrading U.S. Army Europe-Africa to a 3-star command, he is taking another step down a dangerous path. A step that is not in the best interests of our nation or our servicemembers. General Donahue has dedicated his entire career to upholding the high standards and warrior ethos that Hegseth claims he is restoring to our ranks. Gen. Donahue has led Soldiers at all levels in Airborne (including Ft. Bragg’s 82nd) and Mechanized units, the 75th Ranger Regiment, and our most prestigious special operation units. He deployed over 20 times in support of Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, Inherent Resolve, Atlantic Resolve, Freedom’s Sentinel, European Assure, Deter and Reinforce, and in support of the Sudan crisis. Hegseth would do well to surround himself with more patriots like General Donahue and to get his henchmen, who are not qualified to carry Donahue's bag, out of the Pentagon. Keep your word, Mr. Secretary: choose meritocracy over your mediocre yes-men. notus.org/defense/pentag…

Germany is heading for political apocalypse. Merz has good instincts on immigration and entitlements, but he can't get anything done in coalition with the SPD. The only winner in this dysfunction is the AfD, which now polls at 29%, up from 20% a year ago. robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/the-politica…

@cyprien_ronze @anna_p_neumann That’s cherry-picking. He was simply throwing arguments at the wall to see what would stick. Let me remind his other pronouncements in geopolitics:
Nairpic@Nairpic16

@Tim_AveEuropa Macron is the guy who came up with the concept of “Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok” and in 2021 was telling the Baltic states that cooperation with Russia is the future. I wonder why he did not put military assets to deter Russian agression?

@anna_p_neumann In 2019, Macron declared NATO brain-dead. Before COVID and the war, he was the only one defending the concepts of European sovereignty and strategic autonomy. He spearheaded the NGEU recovery plan. This guy is a visionary when it comes to geopolitics.

Former U.S. Secretary of State just revealed an exchange between Biden and Emmanuel Macron at G7 in 2021: Biden: “America is back.”
Macron: “For how long?” This perfectly captures Macron’s long-standing warning: Europe must not depend on the U.S. for its own security. Trump was never just an accident - and won’t necessarily be the last disruption. The real tragedy is that Germany, under Merkel and Scholz, too often responded to Macron‘s ambitions for a stronger Europe with skepticism and hesitation. Europe‘s slowness in the last years is a product of German naivety. This has to change!

The rules-based global order is breaking down, and it will not simply return, argues IWM Permanent Fellow Ivan Krastev in yesterday's @ORF Eco Spezial episode about the economic effects of Donald Trump's presidency. 📺 Watch his interview with @michaelmhofer on Europe's strategic weakness, protectionism, and emerging centers of power here: youtube.com/watch?v=ysz48i…

That same year, GROM, Polish special forces, undertook “Operation Simoom”: evacuating CIA and DIA officers stranded in Baghdad at the outset of Desert Storm. The GROM operatives got the Americans, who were furnished with fake Polish passports, drunk on Johnnie Walker Red so they’d appear shitfaced Slavs at the border. It fooled Saddam’s mukhabarat and marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship in intel cooperation.

29.03.1990: The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, and as early as March 1990, Polish Foreign Minister Krzysztof Skubiszewski expressed Poland’s interest in joining NATO during his visit to NATO headquarters. At that time, Poland was still a member of the Warsaw Pact.

I used to be unable to wrap my head around how dissident intellectuals of the communist bloc were sidelined by Western academia. But seeing how Iranian and Venezuelan dissidents are treated by Western leftists now... I am starting to think there is something repeating here.

SIKORSKI: I see few NATO officers here, they may not like what I'm about to say. Until year or two ago, we imagined it was us who were training Ukrainians. Now, it's we who need to take lessons from them cause they know modern war, there's no substitute for practical experience.

A big pivot from Ken Griffin on AI: “Number one is, in the last few months, there has been a step change in the productivity of the AI toolkit. It is profoundly more powerful than it was just nine months ago. And for us at Citadel, that has allowed us to unleash a much broader array of use cases for AI. And it has been really interesting to watch, to be blunt, work that we would usually do with people with masters and PhDs in finance over the course of weeks or months being done by AI agents over the course of hours or days. These are not these are not mid-tier white collar jobs. These are like extraordinarily high skilled jobs being, I'm going to pick a word, automated by agentic AI. And I gotta tell you, I went home one Friday actually fairly depressed by this because you could just see how this was going to have such a dramatic impact on society. When you witness it in your own four walls, when you see work that used to be man years of work being done in days or weeks, it's like, wow, like that's the first time I've seen real impact in our four walls.” This echoes my own experience with agents and the conversations I am having with students, friends & clients. The toolkit has dramatically transformed and it feels like in finance, for the first time, AI is real.

Skaudri.

When you listen to Trump talk about Taiwan (or many other topics) it’s the stuff he doesn’t say that is more revealing. Asked about Taiwan he blathers on about how big and strong China is, how tiny Taiwan is, about tariffs and dumb American presidents who didn’t use them. What doesn’t he talk about? Alliances, obligations, democracy, values, honor, etc. Keep in mind, if you don’t care whether Trump throws Taiwan under the bus, that wouldn’t be the only betrayal involved. We’d be screwing Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Australia too. I’m not saying we should get into a shooting war over Taiwan. I am saying Trump shouldn’t betray our allies, our values, and our national security and national honor just because he’s got a man crush on Xi.

Trump global incoherence: Admin undercuts First Island Chain (🇯🇵🇰🇷🇹🇼🇵🇭🇲🇾 ) confidence in 🇺🇸 commitment, strategy. And wages tariff wars on these Asian allies. As DoD cancels already deploying @USArmy armored brigade to 🇵🇱, weakening NATO Eastern Flank to save $ bc of 🇮🇷fiasco.

Waiting for the 4D chess people to explain how the incipient surrender of Taiwan to China and abandonment of a central pillar of US security in the Asia-Pacific for 50 years is in fact another stroke of pure genius from President Metternich.
