There are fewer than 10 vaquita porpoises left on Earth. Not 10,000. Not 100. Ten. 🐬 And they were supposed to be gone by now. Scientists predicted extinction by 2021. They're still here — barely. The vaquita is the world's smallest cetacean. Less than 5 feet long. It exists in exactly one place on Earth: a sliver of the northern Gulf of California. There is no backup population. No second habitat. No second chance. What's killing them isn't a mystery. It's a net. Illegal gillnets set for totoaba fish — whose swim bladders sell on the black market for up to $80,000 per kilogram — are drowning the vaquita as bycatch. Called "the cocaine of the sea," totoaba bladders are trafficked from Mexico to China where they're used in traditional medicine. Cartels run the trade. Poachers work the water. And the vaquita dies in nets that weren't even meant for them. Mexico banned these gillnets. Then kept issuing permits anyway. In 2021, the government actually re-opened vaquita habitat back up to fishing. Here's the gut-punch: Scientists say the genetics are still viable. The vaquita can still recover — IF the nets stop. That's it. That's all it takes. Remove the nets. Save the species. But the nets keep going in. So who's watching? A decade ago, Sea Shepherd anchored a ship in the vaquita refuge and never left. They've pulled 1,200+ illegal nets from those waters. They work alongside the Mexican Navy, 24/7 patrols, thermal drones, night watches. They were projected to fail. The vaquita was projected to vanish. Neither did. The question isn't whether this species can survive. Science says it can. The question is whether we'll let it. I visited this property to do a baseline check for an endangered species assessment and was shocked driving through incredibly degraded desert country for hours at a time. It is catastrophic that Australia has allowed cattle stations to get away with what the environmental damage they do.
