All we know is the victim was older than 12 and younger than 16. We can also infer that prosecutors didn’t think they could prove force or lack of consent, either of which would have been a life felony. The fact that he got only probation suggests some mitigating circumstances we don’t know about (which may or may not be related to the fact that he was a 19-year-old high-school student).

Out of morbid curiosity, I looked up the murder victim’s criminal case. He had pleaded no contest to a single count of lewd/lascivious battery committed when he was in high school. He was sentenced to five years’ probation.
