@AgnesCallard At least for novels, it's an artifact of how the publishing industry works. A publisher buys a book based on the blurb and opening chapters. If those are bad, the book won't get printed. If the end is bad, no one will know until it's too late.

Nobody warned me about the really frustrating stage of writing up findings where more time is spent pondering and thinking than doing any writing. I feel so unproductive but hope something is happening in the hidden depths of my mind.

I know I recommend it pretty frequently, but more people really need to read David Noble’s “The Religion of Technology.” A lot of these people talking about tech and AI aren’t talking about actual technology, they’re talking about a god they worship and believe will save them.
