This has been many many years in the making (I first presented on hashflags in 2017) but thanks to @katemiltner's excellent work we've conceptualised implementation of the feature as an example of 'platformed solidarity' -- the article is open-access and available now!

I 'revealed' this at the #AoIR2024 keynote, but last month I joined @CIMethods at the University of Warwick as an Associate Professor. It's a big but exciting move, after five years with the wonderful folks at @SocStudiesShef and the Digital Media & Society team!

@katemiltner this also in a way marks the end of an era, both in terms of writing about Twitter/X, but also in how the feature was used prior to the takeover, who was working on it, and what the platform is doing now (including rebranding as hashmojis in the suite of 'branded features')
