Even that 2006 they played terrible football, i remember as a little kid telling my Dad why Italy can't score lots of goals like Germany and France. Player brilliance carried them.

It started in 2010. Many countries overlook small failures until they blow fully in their faces. They went home at the group stage in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup editions. There had been signs since then that their talent generation had begun to stall relative to other European powerhouses and even other smaller nations. The Euro 2020 triumph also didn't help. It probably made them overestimate their current capacity and state. They need to develop better footballers. Coaching, obviously hasn't looked like the solution, but everything has to get better. A football country like Italy can't miss out on three consecutive World Cups. It beggars belief.
