Final version of this thing now published in @PLOSBiology, so ... some weekend reading. 🧵 Sexual selection (SS) is a major strand of evolutionary theory, but how and why it varies across species at global scales is poorly known. 1/9 journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

Does vegetation structure shape animal vocalisations? A meta-analysis testing for phenotypic and evolutionary responses suggests that the acoustic adaptation hypothesis is not universally valid across birds, amphibians, and mammals.   Kudos to @brbbfreitas for the terrific work!

Super happy with our new collaborative paper in the Neotropics! We examined how climatic variability affects sexual selection for nuptial gifts. Congrats Camila for this awesome research 🙌🏻 and the fantastic work of all authors Find out more at @ASNAmNat journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10.10…

Does the inherent sex difference in gamete size drive sex roles? In a recent @EvolLetters opinion piece, @TimJanicke reflects on recent theoretical and empirical advances in understanding how anisogamy shapes sexual differentiation. doi.org/10.1093/evlett…

In an attempt to be explicit about the ultimate target of intra-sexual competition, I propose to define sexual selection as competition for access to reproductive resources provided by potential mating partners.   4/4

I argue that the nature of pre-copulatory competition does not depend on whether individuals compete for gametes or any other resources accessed through mates.   Instead, both sexes compete for a package of resources including gametic and non-gametic resources. 3/4
