After several major thaws and rain-on-snow events this month, recent storms dropped 5.6 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and nearly 10 inches over the past 2 days, making it look like winter again on the Mount Washington summit.

Yesterday, temperatures on the summit of Mount Washington dropped 53 degrees F over the course of 24 hours, from 43 degrees above to 10 below! Rain across the higher terrain were quickly replaced by inches of rime ice, as captured by summit intern and photographer Ryan Steinke.

This new snow combined with gusts over 100 mph to take the summits from almost completely bare to heavily drifted, which observers discovered when they opened the door to collect the precipitation can at sunrise this morning!

After record breakingly warm temperatures this past week melted most of the summit's snowpack, almost 7 inches of new snowfall were deposited over the course of this weekend's storm!

Summit staff enjoyed a great view of a partial undercast yesterday evening. A strong storm will bring warm, wet, and windy conditions to the higher summits on Saturday, with 100+ mph wind gusts and temperatures in the 40s possible.

The Northern Presidentials were treated to a nearly clear sunrise this morning before snow and clouds began to roll in early this afternoon, buoyed by high winds. If you're planning a trip to the higher summits this weekend, be sure to prepare for continued strong winds and snow.

A vibrant sunrise this morning (February 25) may be the only glimpse of sun at the higher terrain today. Overcast skies, snow, and summit fog are expected to persist through much of the day. For full details, visit mountwashington.org/forecast

The calm before the storm! A powerful Nor'easter will impact New England tomorrow, bringing high winds and heavy snow. Although the White Mountains may only see a few inches of snow, coastal New England communities are gearing up for potential blizzard conditions.

After a prolonged stretch of lighter winds to start February, hurricane-force winds returned to the summit this morning, producing lots of blowing snow off Nelson Crag at sunrise today.

On Groundhog Day, the summit saw it shadow from sunrise to sunset on an unusually clear and nearly cloud-free day. While there is no similar superstition about whether that means 6 more weeks of winter or not, the plunge back to colder conditions likely later this week (1/2)...

January 2026 is now in the books, and it was well below normal here on the summit. Our average temperature was 1.5F (4.3F below normal), making it the 19th coldest January in our records. It was also the coldest month since February 2015.
