I am deeply saddened by the death of Zoe Welsh, a beloved, longtime science teacher at Ravenscroft School, who was a mother, mentor, neighbor, and friend to many in Raleigh. I give my deepest condolences to her family during this time. (1/2)

Here in NC, I introduced HB 970, which, in addition to prohibiting algorithmic pricing using nonpublic data, also makes clear that recommending rent prices to a set of competitors in the rental market using public datasets is still price fixing.

DOJ’s settlement with RealPage fails working families struggling with the cost of housing. The settlement does nothing to stop RealPage from automatically fixing rent prices using public datasets. That’s still price fixing. Renters and working families deserve better.
The Wall Street Journal@WSJ

The DOJ said it would settle its lawsuit against apartment-pricing company RealPage, which it had accused last year of enabling landlords to illegally coordinate rental-price increases on.wsj.com/3Kp76hN

This morning, on the 24th anniversary of September 11th, I joined the @NCNationalGuard to remember that day and the guardsmen who gave their lives since. As Pericles said, “Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.” We will never forget.

Breaking: We have obtained a statement from the family of Iryna Zarutska. The family's attorney released this statement. Family of Iryna Zarutska Demands Justice and Public Safety Reform Following Tragic Killing on Charlotte’s Blue Line CHARLOTTE, NC – The family of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who fled war for safety and opportunity in the United States, is speaking out following her tragic and preventable death on the evening of August 22nd. Iryna was killed in a violent attack while riding the Charlotte Area Transportation System (CATS) Blue Line light rail, just minutes from her home. Iryna had built a new life in Charlotte, working full-time at a local pizzeria while attending community college to improve her English. She was a kind and hardworking young woman, deeply loved by her family and friends. That night, she texted her boyfriend that she would be home soon. Tragically, her journey ended in violence near the Camden light rail station. Her loved ones became alarmed when she did not arrive to her apartment at the anticipated time and her phone’s location alerted them that she was still at the station. Upon arriving at the station, they were devastated to learn that Iryna had died at the scene. Her death has since drawn national attention following the release of disturbing surveillance footage. The family is urging the public and media to respect Iryna’s dignity and their grief by not reposting or circulating the footage of her killing. “We are heartbroken beyond words. Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way,”said a family spokesperson. “No family should have to go through this.” Seeking Accountability and Systemic Change The family’s immediate priority is to ensure the man responsible for Iryna’s murder is brought to justice and remains behind bars. However, they are also calling attention to a broader crisis in public safety and systemic failure: A lack of visible or effective security presence on the CATS Blue Line Failure of oversight in the contract between CATS and Professional Security Services (PSS) Absence of adequate safety measures that could have prevented this tragedy The family is demanding a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to Iryna’s death, including lapses in security protocols and failures within the public transportation system. “This could have been anyone riding the light rail that night,” said the family. “We are committed to making sure this never happens again.” A Call to Action The Zarutska family is calling on: Charlotte city officials to publicly address these failures and enact reforms CATS and PSS leadership to cooperate fully with investigations The public and media to show restraint and compassion by avoiding further spread of graphic footage Advocates and allies to join them in demanding justice and long-term change

My heart is with Iryna Zarutska’s family. Her murder was horrific and preventable. Our justice system’s first duty is to keep people safe—and it failed her. We must hold repeat violent offenders accountable, investigate what went wrong, and ensure this never happens again.

CATS released the fatal stabbing video of Iryna Zarutska. I watched it. It is horrifying. I made the call with a small group of managers who watched the clips to not show any video of Iryna on the train. This is out of respect to her family, who may not have seen the video. The video is graphic, disturbing and incredibly scary. After watching the video, we have more context and perspective on what happened that night. This man in the red sweatshirt is Decarlos Brown. The picture is from right before Zarutska got on board. You can see the train was pretty full. When Zarutska boarded the train, she sat in the aisle seat in the row directly in front of him. Brown was at the window. Zarutska was wearing headphones. The two had no interaction whatsoever. She was scrolling on her phone the entire ride. Brown and Zarutska were on the train together for 4.5 minutes. Decarlos Brown showed little to no emotion on the ride. At times he rested his head on the window. Just as CATS said, he looked like any other transit rider. About a minute or so before the fatal stabbing, we noticed a shift. He started to fidget with his hand and his eyes widened. This stood out because we knew what was about to happen, but it wasn't necessarily something that would seem dangerous in the moment. He actually rested his head on the glass again just seconds before he took a knife out of his pocket, stood up and immediately stabbed Iryna Zarutska. Immediately after the stabbing, Brown slowly walked toward the front of the train. Another man ran to tell the light rail operator what happened and to stop. About 2 minutes and 5 seconds after the stabbing, when the train came to a stop at the East/West station, Brown stepped off the train. CMPD arrested him on the platform. It should be noted there were several heroic passengers who rushed to Zarutska's aid. We saw one man take the shirt off his back and attempt CPR. Zarutska’s obituary said she was an artist who loved sculpting and designing unique, eclectic clothing that reflected her vibrant spirit. It went on to say she had a deep love for animals and often cared for her neighbors’ pets. She fled the war in Ukraine with her mother, sister and brother. wsoctv.com/news/local/cat…

Landlords have used algorithmic software to set rents and argued in court it's not illegal. Here in NC, I filed HB 970 to make clear that price fixing through algorithms is still price fixing. Now the GOP would put rentseekers first and bar states from protecting their people.
Carolina Forward@ForwardCarolina

North Carolina's Attorney General @JeffJacksonNC recently won a big settlement with the state's 2nd-largest apartment management firm for using RealPage, an AI tool that helps landlords get around laws against price-fixing collusion. Now, RealPage is getting a lifeline from Republicans in Congress. The GOP's new "big, beautiful" budget and tax bill specifically bars states and cities from banning rent-fixing AI software like RealPage for 10 years. This would provide major relief to the company, but likely help turbo-charge rent hikes around the country. It's unclear whether the law would affect lawsuits like Jackson's here in NC, which are based primarily on existing antitrust laws. But for renters, this is very bad news.

Thank you to everyone who sent emails, made phone calls, and showed up at the #NCGA to put the Farm Act on hold. Section 19 protects pesticide companies in Berlin and Beijin rather than protect the people in Bayboro and Bailey. We must not trade public safety for foreign corporate immunity. @TheShawnHendrix

🚨Farm Bill protects China from Chemical Lawsuits 🚨 Again I ask to do what yall do best share the crap out of this. This one has me furious. Section 19 gives chemical companies immunity including china. Call your rep. They must stop this. Get loud get results! They are watching.
