Ops Normal Volume 2 is really taking shape. The chapters covering the deployment of the 3 Regt AAC Battlegroup to Iraq do, however, have significant omissions. Not a single contribution from any ground crew personnel deployed on FARP operations. Please contact us to rectify this.

A new artwork has appeared on Ecclesall Road overnight (it was still wet)! It looks very much like the work of @bubba2000art 👀 After his recent hugely successful “Home-coming” show, has Bubba returned to the streets of #Sheffield to work his magic?! I love it 🤩 @streetartsheff

@sommecourt Thanks Paul. He was originally Hertfordshire Regiment and came from St Albans. It’s the surname that really intrigues me - and the thought of the RSM trying to pronounce it!

@timlynch656 He’s not a Sussex lad but one of the many men from other regiments transferred in during the Somme. By his number he joined the Sussex around September/October 1916.

Private Edwin Charles Xerxes of 11th Sussex on the memorial at Tyne Cot. Not a common Sussex name but before I go down all kinds of rabbit holes to find out, does anyone know his story?

@GerMilHistory I recently found a toy car made for nursery age children on his headstone. Having led school groups of his age there for years, not once have they tried to infantilize Rifleman Strudwick like this. Sadly it’s poppy bedecked adults who love their performative remembrancing.

@BattlefieldBen Remember that the committee for the WW1 commemoration was made up of more novelists than historians. Says everything you need to know about how military history is treated in the UK.

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1… I totally agree on this point and we can and must do more. However, there was a chance and opportunity with the British Normandy Memorial to assist with this but it has fallen way short. We now have a poorly researched memorial with names missed off, including those still liberating the Normandy region between 1-14 September 1944. The ‘education’ centre really is just a fundraising building with a coffee shop and merchandise area. The education room is the smallest room that would barely struggle to accommodate a class of 20. There is no trying to gloss over this. £30m was given towards this and you have to question what we have in return bearing in mind all those who died have always been commemorated in CWGC cemeteries or named on the Memorial to the missing. Will we see masses of schools going over to Normandy, the reality is no. Cost and distance for schools is a big factor when weighing up against a closer visit to the FWW battlefields. Once again, however, the south coast of England has a huge amount of build up to D-Day history including our flagship museum @TheDDayStory with LCT7074. This is the starting point that needs to be utilised. Add in the D-Day Map room at Southwick House which visually instantly captures people. Numerous CWGC cemeteries and memorials with Normandy campaign casualties. We can do more, we can do better. Schools dont necessarily have to go to France to engage, learn and remember.

Chris Kolonko-Weet on his work investigating anti-invasion defences and the Home Forces who would have largely operated them in WW2. In doing so he reminds us, 1. Quality historical writing can be digital first & 2. Good researchers deserve support. #HistoryWritersDay24

I'm going to produce a video on Market Garden which will include all that I learned about Market Garden in the past 14 years. Don't know when it will be finished, but it will be an ongoing project in the background. (End of message. 😊)
