Photo Caption: The sea is a vital source of livelihoods and natural wealth. The above map, compiled by Beach For Life Thailand, highlights the rich marine and coastal resources surrounding the proposed Land Bridge deep-sea port project. Findings from the group’s “Land Bridge Effect” report suggest far greater biodiversity and community dependence on coastal ecosystems in Ranong and Chumphon than reflected in the official Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA), which has been criticized for limited data, a narrow 5-kilometre study scope, and apparent gaps in reporting. The contrast raises concerns over the accuracy of the assessment and the potential risks to fisheries, tourism, and coastal livelihoods if the project moves forward. #Thailand #LandBridge #แลนด์บริดจ์

Senate Delays Land Bridge Debate as Concerns Grow The Senate has postponed a motion to review the government’s Land Bridge project to next week, allowing lawmakers more time to study its potential impacts. Senator Noraset Pratchayakorn said multiple committees are examining the project and gathering information from relevant agencies. He raised concerns over the government’s urgency, noting the project was not included in its campaign platform or policy statement, and questioned whether it is being rushed without sufficient justification. He also warned that proposed Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) legislation could mirror the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) model, which has faced criticism over environmental impacts. Noraset called for greater transparency and public participation, including referendums at both national and local levels if the project proceeds. Meanwhile, Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa from Bhumjaithai Party said the government will wait for the outcome of a comprehensive study before making decisions. He said the review will cover environmental, economic, geopolitical, climate and security considerations, alongside updated data reflecting current conditions. Separately, Prachachat Party leader Pol. Col. Tawee Sodsong said the more than 1 trillion baht Land Bridge project must ensure benefits reach the public rather than a small group of private investors. He said existing studies remain insufficient to justify investment at this scale. He raised concerns over value for money, comparing the project to Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), which cost about 600 billion baht but spans more than 600 kilometres, while Thailand’s project carries a higher price tag over a significantly shorter distance. Tawee also warned against land speculation, citing lessons from the Eastern Economic Corridor, and raised concerns over concession terms that could grant private operators rights for up to 99 years—an initial 50-year period with a possible 49-year extension—which he said could affect national interests if not properly regulated. Other party figures also questioned the project’s economic assumptions. Economic team head Rungreang Phitthayasiri said projections must be based on realistic data, noting that while Ranong Port has potential, it requires further investment to become a deep-sea port, while Chumphon Port remains focused on agricultural goods and may not support heavy industry. Yala MP Sulaiman Bueanaepinae said communities in the South remain divided, with many farmers and fishers concerned about environmental and livelihood impacts. The project has also drawn scrutiny over plans to reclaim more than 6,900 rai of sea area and its potential impact on natural resources. #Thailand #LandBridge #แลนด์บริดจ์

On the drive to Kuantan, I visited the Malayan Tiger Conservation Centre. The Malayan tiger is critically endangered, and seeing these magnificent animals up close is a stark reminder of the need to protect the species. – LHL

What is Ardisia humilis Vahl? I think useful for Malesian Ardisia spotters [another iNaturalist error...] The name is being used incorrectly. Stone (1989) clears it up in 'New and Noteworthy Malesian Myrsinaceae, III. On the Genus Ardisia Sw. in Borneo.' jstor.org/stable/4064959
