@PeterStefanovi2 Paying £5K/year out of my NET salary on a Plan 2 loan, and still seeing the balance grow! Low earners hardly pay anything back, the super rich will pay it off quickly and incur little interest, while those in the middle are stuck paying these huge sums for 30 years!

@RupertLowe10 The same thing is happening in The Netherlands. I had to retake my Dutch B1 speaking exam along with everyone else in the country who took the exam that day, because they had discovered fraud. Really unfair to all who followed the rules, prepared and took time off work.

This is a scandal. A Home Office whistleblower has come forward to me with serious concerns about foreign nationals taking, and passing, important tests for numerous other foreign nationals in exchange for money. A national crime network. I have written to the relevant ministers demanding action. Does this explain how so many foreign nationals are slipping through the claimed high standards they are supposed to meet? Driving test fraud on an industrial scale? Immigration fraud? An example had one individual sitting numerous driving/'life in the UK' tests on behalf of others. Again, fears of being called a racist getting in the way of fairness and justice. I will pursue this.

This is no defence @lewis_goodall None at all. None of us as journalists would do that. And I am no BBC basher. And you are leaving out wider detail in both Grossman’s and Prescott’s reported concerns, that the programme as a whole stopped well short of impartiality - you see falling into the same trap! He [David Grossman] concluded the main contributors to the documentary were heavily weighted against Trump, with just one supporter against ten who questioned his fitness for office. Worse still, David highlighted alarming concerns about how Panorama had edited Trump’s speech to his supporters on January 6*, 2021, the day of the Capitol Hill riot. Examining the charge that Trump had incited protesters to storm Capitol Hill, it turned out that Panorama had spliced together two clips from separate parts of his speech. This created the impression that Trump said something he did not and, in doing so, materially misled viewers.
Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

The BBC panorama edit was a mistake. It shouldn’t have happened. But it is possible to think that and to think it did not fundamentally misrepresent Trump’s overall actions in the lead up to Jan 6th and on the day itself. With the BBC resiling from it, it presents an entirely false impression, that Trump’s false version of events, is true.

@astor_charlie Why is the government not strictly enforcing learning English as an integration requirement? I became resident in The Netherlands and have to learn Dutch to B1 level and pass the state exams within 3 years or else I’ll be fined and not able to obtain permanent residency.

Last week, I spoke to a Christian missionary who works in Tower Hamlets teaching Muslim women English and offering Bible study for those who want to stay after the class. These English classes are provided in quiet by the Church, not because local councils fail to provide English lessons to immigrants, but because their husbands and the wide Muslim enclave in which they live forbid the women to learn English. The only reading once can take from the situation is that these husbands do not want their wives learning about the new place in which they live, nor the rights and freedoms had by non-Muslim women in the West. There is no interest in seeing their wives have non-Muslim friends or become a part of a non-Muslim community. They want to keep their wives and daughters under their command by keeping them prejudicial towards their own moral framework, unable to recognise and disclose abuses to authorities - such polygamy, honour-killings, or when their little boy starts talking about joining ISIS. The men learn English for the sake of business and dealing with local authorities, not because they wish to make friends with the English lads down the pub or "integrate" into British ways of life. Some of these Muslim women have been here for over a decade and do not know a word of English. If one thinks immigrants are only unintegrated because they do not receive enough English lessons and the English are unkind, one lives in a blank-slate fantasy. A significant number of people to have arrived in this country, particularly since the 1997 and 2016 waves, have no interest in becoming "British". They wish to live as they did at home but with more money - be it earned or granted by the state. I have no issue with people wanting more money but I'm of the opinion people can go and do it elsewhere, in a place more foolish than Britain. To be frank, I'm glad Britain no longer has the same reputation of being kind to strangers; it means people are finally learning from the mistakes of the past and moving forward with greater prudence.

‘They believe Britain is a kind and safe country, and I feel really sorry that not everyone here is.’ Caller Sara, who teaches English to asylum seekers, says her students are ‘simply trying to rebuild a life that has been shattered'.

@RupertLowe10 Appreciate this. The cost of partner visas and eventual citizenship are astronomical in the UK for those of us playing by the rules. By comparison, a 5 year residence permit in The Netherlands for me to join my Dutch partner was only 210 euros.

This may come as a surprise to some, but I would make it significantly easier for British citizens to bring their foreign spouses to the UK. Crucially alongside the introduction of a red list, which would see a long list of countries facing higher barriers to entry - slashing down fraud. This would be based on a number of metrics, with parliamentary oversight to impose checks/changes... If a country's citizens are disproportionately proven to commit fraud, claim welfare, break the law, abuse our generosity, enter illegally? They go on the red list. Albania, Pakistan, Eritrea, Somalia to name just some... It would be a very long list. Perhaps a green list would be more appropriate. If a British man wants to bring his American wife to Britain? Raise a family here? Bring their children up in our country? We should not stand in the way, as currently happens. We should be welcoming and encouraging it. Do not underestimate how hostile the environment currently is. These men and women are treated like dirt by our Home Office - all whilst floods of unvetted third world conmen stream across the Channel to be welcomed with five star accommodation. Where is the decency in that? We deal with so many families torn apart because of these rules in Great Yarmouth. It is unnecessarily cruel. Our immigration system needs a total overhaul. It should reward, not wickedly punish, decent Brits looking to build a life with their husband or wife. Firm, but fair.
