First, hi! Thank you for following! If you’re a Bungo Stray Dogs fan, probably “April’s Fool.” It’s long enough for a full plot and will give you an idea of my style. If you’re an Arcane fan, “it’s the good, defining itself” is my post-canon Jayvik fixit. I hope you enjoy!

@heliaporia I used the phrase “outside observers” specifically to reframe the attempted dichotomy from the prior tweet. You’d have to ask them what their purpose with it was. My point is that fandom was toxic then. Fandom remains toxic. The method and perpetrators have changed.

@tired_ginger Do you mean people who claim to be fans of something despite only reading the wiki or do you mean an "outsider" to fandom in the sense that you can be a fan, of say, Trolls and post on Trolltwt, but still be an outsider to "fandom".

Gamer Gate was one of the worst harrassment campaigns to ever occur that led to women in game development/in fields surrounding game development getting doxxed, getting ran out of their jobs, getting rape threats, getting stuff sent to their homes, etc
Hattie || off to 🦋 as tophat69@tired_ginger

Yes. Fandom WAS toxic pre 2020. I was there. Gamer Gate, ship wars, gatekeeping, squabbling and a LOT of mess and noise. Post-COVID, it IS different. Because before, it was infighting. Now, it’s people looking down at even common fandom activities as aberrant behavior.

@the_corvidae @heliaporia I quoted your words “outside observers” from your tweet immediately before mine. To then use my quoting YOUR phrasing as a condemnation of me is a poor debating tactic. “True Fans” meanwhile is a widely understood term you can look up, which I feel does apply here.

@tired_ginger @heliaporia how do you know they’re “outside observers” if they self-identify as fans? and “appropriate behavior” is very vague. I wonder what you mean by that. or who you mean by that. another word for “outside observers” would be “tourists.” oh, wait, I’ve heard this one before…

@heliaporia My point is that the “outside observers” now see themselves as the “true fans” and the arbiters of what appropriate fan behavior is WITHIN the fandom. That is different than trolls, who have always been around.

@tired_ginger I mean I don't really think so. Even in ur explanation that fandom went from having internal drama to outside observers doesn't ring true to me bc "cringe complications" hit their stride in 2016-2018 and mostly consisted of harassing people in "weird" fandoms like furries

@marssfinesthour Yeah, there’s a lot of that. It’s very much hand in hand with the rest: they have to prove they’re one of the “GOOD fans” if they engage with media by deliberately seeking out and pitting themselves against what they see as a “BAD fan.” It then becomes dogpiling as performance.

@tired_ginger something i’ve seen a lot is “i wanna watch X show but the fandom is horrible”, as if the fandom comes as a package deal with the media

@kNattieP @cosmicstarrry Oh, absolutely not! Sorry I didn’t mention it! Yeah, fandom was a full of racism pre-2020, but frankly the newer fans/“normies” haven’t miraculously cured that with their presence the way they present themselves as in defense of the rest. Racists are still all over fandom.

You're a colourful bunch.
@tired_ginger @cosmicstarrry I was going to say. This convo doesn't even think about the black fan perspective. Which makes sense considering some people (the grifters) are convinced black fans of anything (especially anime) didn't exist pre-covid. They like to throw all of us in with the normies.

@viktoria97149 More like “they’re colonizing fandom spaces,” but I hear you. Fandom still harbors racism. It’s not gone anywhere because of the “wokeism.” I’m in the Arcane and One Piece fandoms, I can still see it clearly. Because even in the “old days” people called it out. It didn’t budge.

@tired_ginger White people be like "they are appropriating fandom culture" Jokes aside EXACTLY. I feel like theres a few good things that the commercialization brought however. Like not being so tolerant if racism anymore. Thanks to the "wokeism" of early 2020s I didn't go down the pipeline

@HarbingerStars Yep. Because there is no longer any option to “stay in your lane.” When people from outside feel entitled to dictate ALL appropriate fandom engagement, they basically hunt “objectionable” fans to solicit engagement from others. It’s almost rage-baiting as a social activity.

@tired_ginger Pre-covid was nasty shit. I was there for Voltron (Archons forgive me). But fandom being commercialised and fan creators being Othered as if we're a dev studio and not fans ourselves is new and absolutely abhorrent

@hya_lina @omarsbigsister (So yes, algorithms! But that came down to capitalism because media networks realized that shows with fandoms make them money so they tried to MANUFACTURE fandom culture by pushing fandom activities out further)

@hya_lina @omarsbigsister It really started with Kindle Worlds. Media companies and Bezos went “damn, this fanfic thing is taking off! We want a piece of that!” So they tried to incentivize and monetize fanfic. They courted fans HARD and pushed it out into wider audiences.

Pre-2020 fandom toxicity: ship wars, bullying, infighting, racism and other bigotry, personal drama Post-2020 fandom toxicity: all that but people do it x10 more to farm social credit and they fundamentally hate fandom subculture itself like shipping, cringiness, kink, art, fic

@dx_feelgood YES. It shifted from what he was fighting for, Zaun, to who he was fighting AGAINST. And the tragic thing is, it’s only once Piltover asked him to give up the last thing he was fighting for that he realized what he’d lost sight of. If he gave up Jinx, a win was meaningless.

@dx_feelgood Yeah, the man was a revolutionary. That REQUIRES a level of willingness to FIGHT. It was more a righteous fury then because Zaun IS worth fighting for. But there’s more than just marches and protests to freedom, and Silco was a LEADER in it. He just lost sight of the purpose.

Sort to the show’s top ten ships. Look at how many of them would land a fic writer with significant outcry and harassment. Not because of ship wars, like before 2020, but because the ship itself is “bad/wrong” for various reasons. Things have CHANGED in fandom.

Right now if you gravitate towards a character whose behavior is morally questionable, you are approached by newer fans like you’re being put on trial for those fictional crimes as if you’re an accomplice. I promise you, that wasn’t a thing prior to COVID.
