I am incredibly aware of my particular 'bubble.' I live in a farming community that has been decimated by Starmer policies. My husband's family has owned farming businesses for more than 400 years where we live, and serves every farm in a 100 mile radius. We have personally known 6 farmers who have elected to end their lives. We have seen four restaurants close on our tiny high street, and pubs that only survive because they are paid for already and the family who owns them cares more about older members of the community - who have gone to these pubs for decades - having a place to go and commune and sit by a warm fire than than they do about their own prosperity. Said family loses hand over fist to keep them running FOR THEIR COMMUNITY. We have watched as properties that would have ordinarily sold in 2 to 4 weeks languish on the market for more than a year. Why is no one talking about this? We know of more family-owned companies than I can count who had to lay off more than 20% of their staff due to increases in NI. One friend's business had an increase of £326K/year, and the other almost £750K. And yes, Giles, I am privileged. We also have a home very near where you holiday in West Wales, and I have sat nearby while you and your family have enjoyed your pizza. But have you asked any of those businesses down there if they are going to survive? Our council tax in West Wales was initially tripled by the council because we second-homers are the devil. They then quickly realised that in fact, we keep the place going, so Pembrokeshire alone have now walked that back to a mere 20% increase. So maybe we should sell up there, too? There are 8 houses for sale on our very short street in WW. Nobody can afford that luxury anymore, which will see even more business - and therefore people - suffer as a result. More broadly, in the UK we see things like jury trials being withdrawn, Islamaphobia laws being brought in while antisemitism runs rampant, freedom of speech being constantly under attack, your military being weak compared to Dad's Army, your over-reliance on the guidance and delivery systems & protection of MY country - a country this govt tries to screw over at every turn, only to be smacked down - Digital IDs, which are the ultimate invasion of privacy, and on and on and on. Yesterday the Dutch government imposed an unrealised gains tax on investments, a policy similar to that pitched by that intellectual giant is Rachel Reeves. Hers, though, was more horrifying: she wanted a tax on unrealised gains on property values. My bubble? Perhaps, but I would choose my bubble over yours. I do live in privilege. Perhaps even more so than you, in some ways. But I live in the middle of the real world. Where people simply want to work for their money, go home to a place they own, eat food that is honest and local, watch something non-political and non-biased on tv, save their money for their one holiday a year, and be left alone. I simply wish to be left alone. And that is the other thing. As a US citizen, I am forced to pay taxes both there and here. So I have to make a choice of whether I feel okay about continuing to give my money to a government who are increasingly unhinged in their urge to control. I paid six figures to come here legally and honestly, but am on the very same visa as those who come here for free and live in four star hotels. I did not agree to be discriminated against in that regard, and nor did I agree for my vast tax payments to be used on such initiatives while we alleged 'services' like the NHS languish. How are you not angry, Giles? Your kids are far younger than mine, and mine live in the US. Your kids will be here. Do not get me wrong - I LOVE the UK. I look at the countryside, the culture, the history, the simplicity and I simply cannot comprehend why anyone would just let it crumble. But crumble it will. Until, at least, those who 'just want to be left alone' rise up. Whether it is the words of Emerson or Solzhenitsyn about simply wanting peace and a piece in which to enjoy it, normal average people are fed the hell up.
