We currently use DST for about 7.75 months of out 12. Moving to permanent standard time would mean much less light in the evening for huge portions of the spring and autumn as well as the summer.
It would be horrific. We should either move to permanent DST, or do nothing.

The thing about standard time is that it really doesn’t make sense in the summer. Why have the sun rise at 4:30 AM, when you can instead have the sun set an hour later?
A compromise is desirable. What if, twice a year, we just change the clocks by an hour? Anybody consider this?

Changing clocks sucks but they should've gone with the earlier sunrise one. Not surprised they chose the one that favors commerce over health. USA #1 baby!!

Smell smoke this morning? Its coming from a wildfire outbreak in Ontario. While it should not impact air quality much today, smoke at the surface could increase Wednesday into Thursday, potentially reducing visibilities and air quality. High temperatures may also be limited.

@MeScottieB @TownsUsa Nordic happiness rankings trace to childcare, healthcare, equality, and trust, not sunrise times. Dark winters still take a toll on people there. They've built infrastructure to absorb that cost, which is different from the cost not existing.

@MeScottieB @TownsUsa Take an extreme example: Reykjavik, Iceland. On December 21st, the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at 11:22 AM and sets at 3:29 PM. Are you really sitting there saying they are better off if they have a 12:22 PM sunrise and 4:29 PM sunset? You are insane.

@MeScottieB @TownsUsa I really don't give a fuck. They traded early morning sunlight hours for sunlight in the evening and hated it. It is objectively worse for your health.

@MeScottieB @TownsUsa Because you don't actually know what it's like to have the sun rise at 9 AM. You only know the sun setting at 5. Sunrise at 9 AM would be truly horrible for health. Trust the experts. Permanent DST was enacted in the 70s and people hated it so much they reverted mere months later

The issue is that everyone saying “I want my extra hour after work” only know the sun setting at 4:30 in the winter. They don’t know what it would be like if the sun rose at 8:30 instead so they can have that hour after work . They insist that’s still what they want! Stupid!

I'm just curious, has anyone polled this subject with a question like "which would you prefer, the sun rising at 8 a.m. or the sun setting at 4:30 p.m?" Because, you understand, Americans aren't always good at absorbing the full implications of ideas that get tossed out there

It is a genuinely low IQ take to say "sunlight after work is better". It is objectively studied that it is better for health, safety, and well-being to get sunlight earlier in the day. Our circadian rhythm drives much of our biology. Use a brain cell and look into it.
