"I say this as a university professor of biology who sees young people every day in my classes, 20-30% who can't do basic math operations in their heads that were drilled into school-aged kids & taken for granted up to about 30 years ago" piece by Rob Anderson, Beausejour clipper (Manitoba)

Being a lifelong learner isn’t about taking pride in your knowledge. It's about having the humility to know what you don’t know. My top 23 insights from 2023 🧵

@rastokke @tkingdon There are some nuances to the fade that I talk about in this podcast with Craig and Ollie, but a few things: Start with a simplified format of the problem and ask lots of simple unison response questions. You want to check their responses out loud 1/ educationrickshaw.com/2023/12/13/s3e…

@rastokke I am listening to ep 2 of your podcast and have a question - you and the Dr talk about fading - I know in my middle years classroom - some students need more fading than others do you suggest small group instruction based on ability?

@rastokke Yes - thank you for the example of the fading - that was totally what I had imagined. Yes I like the idea of giving the others something else to do if they don’t need more of the faded practice.

I don't want to say, b/c I don't know your situation, but your idea seems reasonable. The program we use in the after-school program I run is JUMP Math. It scaffolds, which is like the opposite of fading, but same idea. With JUMP you're supposed to use whole class instruction, but some kids move a lot faster and don't seem to need all that scaffolding. For our situation, we have lots of bonus problems for those faster kids to work on when they get ahead (mainly contest problems from Math League, Kangaroo or CEMC). I'm going to ask @MrZachG to weigh in since he works with lots of teachers/kids and he uses Direct Instruction.
