If there is only one thing that researchers can do to improve the quality of their data, they should create data dictionaries before collecting any data. Plan for what you want to see in your final datasets. This planning leads to more usable data.

@tladeras @ChelseaParlett @betanalpha I'm writing a viz paper and a viz person suggested I do augmented math/annotated equations & I'm loving it for the bookkeeping & I very much got that "wasting time" feedback from folks who were a lot more experienced in abstract math than I was 😶

Yes we can argue the best way to highlight or clarify math for different media (I like @betanalpha’s suggestion of introducing pieces one element at a time)
But it helps almost EVERYONE and makes things easier to parse and digest.

in line annotations is one of the most exciting recent trends in making academic research more accessible and it’s really disheartening to see a thread full of senior AI people basically going “lol this is only for lesser engineers, a researcher like me would never need this”
