Here's a random thread about cultural differences around naming customs in Denmark.
So in the UK, people seem to use quite a lot of nicknames or conventional short-forms of names. William -> Bill, Robert -> Bob, but e.g. Emily -> Ems, Charlotte -> Charlie
Funny enough this is still common in Swedish. Only exception I can think of is Frederik, which can be Frede, and Christian, which is sometimes Chrede, Kriller or Kette. Christina can be Chris, Alex for Alexander - more common for Greco-Latin names.
Der er den gamle joke med, at lande, der bliver nødt til at have "demokratisk" som en del af deres landenavn, næppe er det. Det samme lader til at være tilfældet for artikler, der beskriver sig selv som "nuanceret" og "balanceret".
