animal fact of the day: toads ARE frogs! toads are a specific family of frogs: Bufonidae, the true toads :3

Normalize handling amphibians with gloves! If you're handling wild amphibians (especially if you handle multiple consecutively) this also helps prevent the spread of the deadly chytrid fungal disease that has caused the extinction or decline of dozens of species.

I always find it funny how when people handling frogs have gloves and most folks think “oh because slimy!” No, it’s to protect the frog from out gross mammalian oils and other substances they absorb through their skin

@frogclubs @mahalshei I just want to clarify that not all tree frogs are arboreal. Spring peepers, cricket frogs, and chorus frogs for example are in the hylidae family and they aren't arboreal.

@mahalshei toads and typical frogs can live in some of the same environments, but their adaptations are shaped by more than just their habitat! many factors go into it. like tree frogs are arboreal and climb, so they have sticky toe pads. toads are typically terrestrial so they do

@mahalshei like toads are within the order Anura, this is all frogs. this group gets separated into families. the toad family is characterized by their rough warty skin & paranoid glands, so that does set them apart from “typical frogs” but there’s also many wild looking frogs

@jimnsbian @frogclubs Most toads are terrestrial, while frogs are more likely to be aquatic. There are plenty of frogs that use both aquatic and terrestrial habitats though and frogs are not restricted to ponds/wetlands/ect. They also tend to migrate to breeding pools for the spring.
