@tobyhardtospell Half my car was stolen (not an exaggeration), I had $23,000 of damage (well past the felony line) and the police didn't want to take a report because there was "nothing they could do about it." That felony can't end up in crime stats if they don't take a report.

It’s always funny to me how LA today sees generally drab but inexpensive stucco apartments built 1950-2000 as just part of the landscape. They barely even enter policy discussion even though most of us live in them and the reaction to them got us where we are today in many ways.
Chris McKee@Ragcha

Do people complaining about new apartment buildings in LA even live here? I think they’re way better than the crap built between 1950-2000. And wait till the trees around them double in size!

@Ragcha Yeah, that's also part of it. Someone yelling incoherently on a bus will make you feel unsafe even if they don't actually harm anyone.

@tobyhardtospell @WestsideForEv Not going to defend Pratt's policy, but fwiw--LA’s sanctuary law/SB54 don’t bar valid *judicial* warrants or criminal law enforcement. And his Feb quote does expressly state a “firm but humane,” approach focused on violent criminals, not law-abiding workers building LA’s housing.

Underdiscussed: the impact on LA housing of Spencer Pratt helping deport many people who actually build LA’s housing

@tobyhardtospell @WestsideForEv Is the argument here that if elected Pratt will be complicit in deporting people and that will have a negative impact on the cost of housing? Whats the source for the second image asserting Pratt will work with ICE?

@BoredElonMusk @tobyhardtospell Exactly. Just like almost every other industry in LA. We’ve chased almost everyone out with burdens of over regulation, crime, and just a general hostile business environment.

Does anyone have a comparison of where people who are homeless in CA were last housed vs where people in homeless other states were last housed? Presumably other states also have some homeless people from other states (even CA), feels like a missing data point.
Giacomo Volpe 🌹🤝🌐@_giacomo_volpe_

Everyone loves this bs line because it excuses CA Dems for their failures and it allows CA Rs to pretend we can fix it without building housing CA homeless people demos are broadly in line with the state at large and they overwhelmingly last lived in CA before becoming homeless

@wackawacka23 @BoredElonMusk There is already a shortage of building labor. If Americans want to work in construction there are jobs for them. Fewer homes being built means higher housing costs for LA residents.

@BoredElonMusk @tobyhardtospell Oh the horrors of young men having gainful well paying employment. I really don’t understand the obsession with having immigrant workers over local workers when we have the highest unemployment the country.

@moseskagan Well if the last decade has taught us anything, it’s that conspiracy theorist reality tv blusterers always follow the law assiduously. I think he’d find a way to help, but if you think he is just making empty and illegal promises to voters that also doesn’t speak well of him

@moseskagan Did you see the second screenshot? He’s vowed to work with them. ICE deported a bunch of people from LA last year with a municipal government that was opposed to them and regardless of policy. They could deport more with a mayoral admin helping them as he promises to.

@tobyhardtospell Wait, why do you think he's would help deport anyone (given that sanctuary policy is firmly ensconced at the municipal and state levels)?

The biggest bullshit move by DHS in its history. So everyone on a O1 or H1B visa would have to stop working legally in the US, go back to their country and wait for years of backlog? This includes top scientists in our universities, founders of billion dollar companies (at least 3 just in our portfolio would be affected by the way). And if we look at individual countries it becomes even more bs. Indians would have to wait decades. Russians don’t have anywhere to go (there is no US embassy in Russia, hello?). This is the worst imaginable way to disrupt important work for the country and pretend you’re fighting some loophole.
Homeland Security@DHSgov

An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.

This thicket of veto points is why US cities are so uniquely dysfunctional. Decision rights over projects that transcend the boundaries of multiple cities should rest entirely with a metropolitan planning entity.

If California is ever going to have coherent public transit, it will probably need new state laws further limiting the ability of cities to block transit lines through their territory. This may require overriding some of their control of streets. @cayimby @mateosfo @mnolangray
