@TrudiNewZealand No question on this. The root system supporting a live tree are 'inflated' & firm. Think of a balloon. Kill or remove the tree, the roots collapse. That leads to massive destabilization. Even on flat ground you'll see sinkholes develop over time. Quite logical.

Was the removal of English Oaks from Mount Maunganui a contributing factor to the recent Land Slide in January 2026? The removal of English Oaks and other trees generally increase the risk and severity of landslips has been a subject of significant concern, particularly following the intense storm from January 16 to 22, 2026.  Trees play a critical role in restricting the flow of slips; tellingly, many major slips during the recent January deluge occurred on steep, bare ground where vegetation had been removed. English Oaks and other exotic trees, have historically prevented slip damage.   In June 2023, Tauranga City Council used helicopters to remove eight large exotic trees from Mauao, including a Holm Oak along with pine, poplar, chestnut, and macrocarpa.  The council acknowledged that mecahanical disturbance on these slopes can trigger instability. These large mature trees provide deep root systems that mechanically anchor soil on steep slopes. Tauranga City Council approved the removal of exotic trees (including Holm Oaks) from the Mauao, the hill adjacent to Adams Avenue, in June 2023. The removals were executed in alignment with the 2018 Mauao Historic Reserve Management Plan, a policy mandating the progressive removal of exotic species from the maunga (mountain) to restore its ecological status. 
 The Tupuna Maunga Authority (TMA) prioritized cultural restoration, aiming to return the maunga to its original native forest composition, viewing exotic trees like oaks as culturally inappropriate. The slip on Adams Avenue occurred after 9:30 AM on January 22, 2026, burying campervans and an ablution block. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

@NZFatso @ThavasRas He has got his citizenship by being a ‘citizen by decent’ from his parent(s). You cannot become a ‘citizen by decent’ from your grandparent(s). This is the law. So you can not automatically pass this down to your children if you and they were not born in NZ.

@ThavasRas The headline is incorrect. From my understanding, from his interview with HDA, he has kiwi citizenship. But bureaucracy means he can't get it for his children born overseas. Surely anomaly, which now highlighted can be fixed.

How many of us were sucked in by Ardern, and her "Different kind of power"? I think many women were.
