Essex County Club is widely regarded as the first great course built by the prolific Donald Ross. And it’s arguably his finest work. Of his 400+ courses, Ross’s best designs tend to be the places he spent the most time. He lived on the course at ECC for four years and worked on it for another four. It certainly shows. Add in the rugged New England coastal terrain, a gorgeous historic clubhouse, a wonderful professional staff and a welcoming membership, and you’ve got a truly charming and very special place to spend a day.

Donald Ross’ brilliant cop mounds/dunes of Belleair CC. Ross wrote about his use of sandy cop mounds: “A cop mound & pot bunker combination is particularly helpful in dividing the line of play on parallel holes, it being equally hazardous for both holes.” @DonaldRossSocie

I post this in the aftermath of a presentation we delivered to the Donald Ross Society. A comment came from the audience that they didn’t see these dunes on many of his courses. A great example of how we can’t pigeon hole Ross into a “style” of golf design.

Golfers may like the look of lush green grass, but do they know the downsides of this aesthetic? Lush turf requires a lot of resources and doesn’t necessarily deliver the best playability #GSRrewind 👇

Select the cheapest trees you can find. Don’t worry about how big trees will be in the future. If you think a hole is too easy, plant trees to fix it. For these and other great tips on how to ruin a golf course with trees 👇 #GSRrewind

The course conditions we enjoy today depend on highly specialized (and very expensive) equipment. Things have come a long way since the days when sheep and rabbits handled the mowing.

There’s a lot of arguments to consider with this roll back, many of which we will only be decided with time. As individuals we all have biases to what we think and as such we need a governing body to make decisions on our behalf for the greater good. As much as it’s easy to hate politics( I particularly hate committees) it’s the most widely used system to solve the NIMBY in all of us. @RandA @USGA @PGATOUR @DPWorldTour

I don’t understand the anger about the golf ball roll back. It will make no difference whatsoever to the average golfer and puts golf back on a path of sustainability. It will also help bring back certain skills in the pro game that have been eradicated over the past 2 decades. The people who are upset about this decision shouldn’t be mad at the governing bodies, they should be mad at elite pros and club/ball manufacturers because they didn’t want bifurcation. The governing bodies presented us with that option earlier this year. Elite pros and ball manufacturers think bifurcation would negatively affect their bottom lines, when in reality, the game is already bifurcated. You think we play the same stuff you do? They put pressure on the governing bodies to roll it back to a lesser degree for everyone. Bifurcation was the logical answer for everyone, but yet again in this game, money talks.
