@BareLeft And I think being privately educated can insulate ppl from really understanding or being able to empathise with ppl poorer than them because they don't get to meet them and therefore their thinking as an adult becomes totally warped as a result

This is a bad and stupid take, but...! ... One that is going to keep coming up as living memory of the majority of the UK population living in council housing begins to fade, and we approach 50 years of Right to Buy decimating council housing stock numbers without replacements.
Scott@sc0ttfb

Does anyone else think council housing in the UK is really weird. Something most of the country never sees anyone interact with or never uses themselves and then another chunk of the country for which it is a way of life and a system they know perfectly how to game

UK is such a crab bucket that people who are lucky enough to be grandfathered into social housing are seen as "gaming the system" and people blame them for the decades-long shortage of council housing instead of blaming the governments who have caused it

@westminstertory When you say if there was a tourist tax that hotels still need to be competitive who are you saying they need to be competitive with? It's not each other, if there is a tax which is the same across the board

We are clear: any overnight tourist levy must work for Westminster, not against it. If a levy is introduced, the money should stay local and be reinvested in the priorities that matter to residents and businesses, including safety, cleaning, and support for our hospitality sector. Our leader, Cllr Paul Swaddle @paulswaddle discussed this with BBC London’s Eddie Nestor after the King’s Speech. westm.news/2b6d17 #Westminster #Hospitality #TourismTax #TouristTax

I'm not defending the previous system of having to bid higher than the asking price. But the new system is also going to have discrimination built in, and I don't think the government has anticipated this or thought about how to address it

Even now they could be thinking the same as employers do about if you're choosing to move and how long you've lived at your current place. Like if you've lived in the same place a long time that makes you more attractive as a potential tenant

Moving out and leaving on June 6th, giving keys back 10am that day, landlord suggested we would pay her a quarter of a calendar month's rent as "one week" ... conveniently about £100 more than if you use a calculator

@SebMilbank @Telegraph If you wrote council staff and the change to councillors was made by your editors, then they have screwed you here, but that doesn't change the fact that this is one of many errors. But the whole central argument seems to be based on you being jealous of : poor people.

@SebMilbank @Telegraph You wrote "councillors giving themselves six-figure salaries". Below is a screenshot of the article with those words. Explain to me what you think happens when someone is offered temporary accommodation. Who gets offered that, and why. Go on, tell me

In some London boroughs, 2 in 5 properties are socially rented. Vast swathes of prime, inner london land is occupied by decaying, poorly managed council housing, inhabited by an economically inactive population. My latest for the @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/money/property…

@Simoncitizen @SebMilbank @Telegraph So ... councillors? My point was that you would expect a well researched article to be accurate, properly fact-checked by editors and not contain obvious mistakes

@tom4queenspark @SebMilbank @Telegraph 2021 census data shows that 47.6 per cent of the household reference persons who lived in social homes in London were born outside of the UK. Do you think this is appropriate?

@tom4queenspark @SebMilbank @Telegraph There are literally hundreds of thousands of foreigners (ie people not born here) living in social housing. These people should not even be eligible for such accommodation.
